The Hong Kong Marathon 2025 is set to take place on February 9, 2025, anticipated to draw around 74,000 participants from the local and international running communities. To accommodate this major event, the Hong Kong Transport Department has announced extensive road closures and alterations to public transport services throughout the city.
Road closures will begin on the night of February 8, with phased implementations starting at 11:30 PM. The Transport Department has advised residents to stay informed by checking their website or utilizing the Hong Kong Travel Easy mobile app for real-time updates on closure locations and transportation arrangements. Road access will be progressively reopened after the completion of the marathon, expected around 2 PM on February 9.
Areas significantly impacted include Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, Wan Chai, and numerous routes connecting these hubs. Notably, Nathan Road will be closed from the junction at Salisbury Road to the junction at Gascoigne Road, both northbound and southbound, as well as portions of the East Corridor and various significant thoroughfares across the island.
He Junjie, the Senior Transport Officer, mentioned, "Traffic is expected to be significantly congested during the marathon. I urge drivers to avoid affected areas on race day to mitigate delays." This congestion is particularly anticipated around areas with live race activities, such as the routes along the Victoria Harbour shoreline.
To facilitate the movement of participants and spectators, the MTR (Mass Transit Railway) will start operating earlier than usual on race day, with several lines offering services starting as early as 3:25 AM. Notably, lines such as the Tuen Ma Line and East Rail Line will provide added convenience, making it easier for runners to reach starting points.
Public bus services will also undergo significant adjustments. From 11:15 PM on February 8, over 211 daytime bus lines and 33 special minibus routes will be suspended, shortened, or diverted until the streets reopen. Night services will similarly be affected, with 49 overnight routes and six special night minibus services needing reallocation and timetable changes.
The authorities encourage the use of public transport as the best alternative for getting around on marathon day and are closely monitoring traffic conditions with contingencies planned to address any arising issues.
While the marathon presents logistical challenges, it also serves as a celebration of athletic spirit and community, drawing participants from diverse backgrounds. Local organizations will be on hand to support runners and cheer them on as they traverse the scenic course marked by the city’s iconic landmarks.
Residents are urged to plan their routes and transportation needs well in advance to avoid any last-minute situations on race day. Awareness of the revised traffic flow and public transport schedule will prove helpful, ensuring participation and viewership remain enjoyable for all involved.
For those planning to attend or participate, scheduling adjustments and patience will be key components for successfully enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of Hong Kong Marathon 2025.
