Hong Kong International Sevens Set To Dazzle This Weekend

The tournament promises electrifying matches, vibrant shows, and spectacular fireworks displays over three days.

The highly anticipated Hong Kong International Sevens Rugby Tournament is set to kick off this Friday, March 28, 2025, and will run through Sunday, March 30, 2025, at the newly completed Kai Tak Main Stadium. This year, the tournament includes a record 30 top teams competing in 72 matches.

This year features the introduction of the "Sevens Fan Village," covering an impressive 7,800 square feet. Originally planned to open from the start of the competition until 11 PM each day, the Rugby Federation announced that the Fan Village will close at 10:30 PM on both Friday and Saturday nights to minimize disturbance to neighboring areas and will resume later, remaining open until 7 PM on Sunday.

According to the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mrs. Carrie Lam, the Fan Village will showcase a variety of attractions. Aside from this, there will be over 20 food stalls located inside the venue, offering a diverse range of culinary options for attendees. To facilitate fan access, various hotels will also provide shuttle bus services for arrivals and departures from the stadium, enhancing the overall experience and expected after-hours spending in the city.

The opening ceremony promises to be a spectacular affair, featuring a laser projection performance that incorporates iconic elements of Hong Kong culture along with classic rugby scenes. Different flashing effects will be paired with enthusiastic musical rhythms, designed to energize the crowd. Additionally, during the closing ceremony, organizers will raise the stadium's sky curtain for the first time, allowing for a breathtaking fireworks display featuring 25-meter-high colorful fireworks. This show will be enhanced with 28 launch points placed strategically around the stadium, synchronized with 8-meter-high flame pillars.

The Tourism Board has also shared insights into the notable elements of the tournament. "The Sevens has become an outstanding draw for international attention, and we are excited to welcome back guests not just from Hong Kong but around the globe," remarked a spokesperson from the Tourism Board. The tournament this year is expected to feature celebrity performances, including the cheerleading team from the South Korean championship baseball team, the Kia Tigers. This world-famous team will dazzle fans with their renowned support routines and energetic shows, adding vibrancy to the atmosphere over the weekend.

The development of the event has been strategically promoted by the Tourism Board, which has rolled out an extensive online campaign targeting rugby enthusiasts from countries like Australia and New Zealand through social media platforms and local travel agencies. Advertisements are also being placed at major landmarks and transit stations in cities like Sydney and London to maximize international exposure.

The Tourism Board has designed an informational web page for the event that includes guides to the Kai Tak area, transportation advice, a list of nearby eateries, and shopping spots for visitors. Furthermore, promotional offers are being provided to encourage attendees to explore more around the venue, turning this spectacular sports event into a gateway to the local economy and nightlife.

Fans are gearing up for a weekend filled with exciting matches, vibrant shows, and a rich combination of culture and sport at the Hong Kong International Sevens, reinforcing its position as a must-go event on the global rugby calendar. As the tournament approaches, anticipation rises for what is sure to be a thrilling showcase of athletic talent and entertainment.
