Hong Kong Braces For Impact From Tropical Storm Toraji

Businesses and schools shut as authorities issue warnings for the approaching storm

HONG KONG: Schools and many businesses shut down on the morning of November 14 as authorities raised the third-highest typhoon warning level, signaling the approach of tropical storm Toraji. The storm, which tracked about 150 kilometers south of Hong Kong, prompted residents and officials alike to brace for potential impacts.

The Hong Kong Observatory issued weather warnings, with significant winds expected to lash the region throughout the day. Although Toraji did not make landfall, the strong winds and rains necessitated the precautionary measures taken by schools and businesses, marking another day where routines were disrupted.

By late morning, the situation began to stabilize; the strong wind alert was downgraded, allowing many businesses to resume operations. Interestingly, the city’s stock exchange remained open, holding its ground for trading activities even amid the storm, defying the usual protocol of halting operations during severe weather.

Meanwhile, the Airport Authority reported normal operations, with flights operating as scheduled. This was good news for travelers caught up amid the swirling winds, creating some sense of normalcy amid the chaos.

Residents had prepared for Toraji, anticipating heavy winds mixed with torrential downpours, leading to potential flooding concerns across the city. Evacuation and emergency plans were also put on standby, with various community centers designated to provide refuge should the weather worsen.

Prior to Toraji's arrival, there were intense discussions on social media about the storm's track and intensity. Locals shared updates and precautions, creating a blend of community support and anxious anticipation. It showed how technology plays a role even amid vast storms, connecting people to share resources and updates.

Residents recalled their experience with Typhoon Hato back in 2017, which produced catastrophic damage and forcing thousands to evacuate as intense flooding became widespread. This reality has left many Hong Kong residents on high alert for any storm like Toraji.

Despite the warnings and closures, some locals took the opportunity to venture out, enjoying the change of pace the storm brought to daily life. Others remained cautious, staying indoors where possible, preparing for potential power outages—a reality all too familiar for those accustomed to Hong Kong's typhoon seasons.

Schools and educational institutions adopted various methods to inform and protect their students, with many sending alerts via mobile apps to keep parents updated. Some schools shared resources about how children could keep safe at home if they were unable to attend classes.

While the storm posed disruptions, it also sparked curiosity and concern about the effects of climate change on storm frequency and intensity. Many environmental scientists remind us how the buildup of greenhouse gases can lead to warmer oceans, which fuel stronger storms. This conversation gained traction, with local experts weighing on how cities like Hong Kong must adapt to the changing climate.

All eyes were on Toraji, but authorities and residents alike hoped for the best as they prepared for any surprises the storm might bring. Fingers crossed, Hong Kong could weather the storm with walking the line prioritizing safety along with resilience.
