Honeymoon Trends Shine As Outdoor Adventures Surge

With interest soaring for romantic getaways and outdoor activities, the travel industry braces for diverse consumer demands.

With 2025 approaching, travel trends reflect increasing interest among consumers for both romantic getaways and outdoor adventures, shaping how many plan their vacations. Reports indicate honeymoon destination searches rose by 32% this past month alone, demonstrating how lovebirds are prioritizing travel for their special occasions.

According to Travelbag, Bali tops the charts for the most sought-after honeymoon spots. The paradise-like Indonesian island presents affordable options, with the average cost for a 14-night stay for couples around £1,966. Notably, 46% of local activities are categorized as ‘good for couples’, accompanied by over 1,267 romantic restaurants available for intimate dining.

Following Bali, St Lucia and Seychelles claimed the second and third spots, respectively. St Lucia features the highest percentage of adult-only hotels, making it particularly attractive for couples wanting uninterrupted time together. Meanwhile, Seychelles impresses with 27% of its dining options classified as romantic, offering unique experiences for diners and lovers alike.

The full list of top trending honeymoon destinations includes:

  • Bali
  • St Lucia
  • Seychelles

  • Costa Rica
  • Bora Bora

  • Sri Lanka
  • Koh Samui
  • Banff

The enthusiasm around honeymoons, dubbed as the official month of love, suggests consumers are eager for romantic escapades. But the trends aren’t limited to couples; single travelers are also tapping the adventure market. This has led to the rise of the ‘singlemoon’ concept, where solo travelers embrace their independence and discover new destinations alone.

Beyond romantic trips, interest in outdoor sports has been increasing, particularly among younger Chinese consumers. The market size for the outdoor sports sector in China is projected to exceed 3 trillion yuan or approximately $413 billion this year, driven largely by the popularity of activities like cycling, fishing, and hiking. According to LeadLeo Research Institute, this growth reflects not just traditional outdoor sports enthusiasts but also integrates broader lifestyle choices.

With warm weather returning, excursions to suburban locations and the desire to engage with nature surge, prompting significant increases in the sale of outdoor gear. For example, search inquiries on Alibaba Group's Xianyu revealed cycling equipment demands rose by 284% after the Spring Festival. The increase resonates with younger consumers who are inclined toward purchasing secondhand equipment, emphasizing sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

The Chinese government is also playing its part by supporting this movement with favorable policies aimed at enhancing the outdoor sports infrastructure. Recent guidelines state China aims to build approximately 100 high-quality outdoor sporting venues by 2030. The effort is expected to bolster participation and attract more international events, contributing to the anticipated boom within this sector.

Market analysts note there's been consistent growth of outdoor sports figures, with annual rates from 2018 to 2022 hitting 27.1%. Leading brands are expected to evolve, moving from niche offerings to targeting mass markets, particularly as consumers increasingly recognize domestic products.

For example, Shangdao Fishing Line Co Ltd saw sales increase significantly, posting revenue growth exceeding 120% year-on-year, highlighting how diverse outdoor sports are capturing young people's interest. Looking beyond China, outdoor sports brands are also establishing footholds overseas with cross-border e-commerce operations already underway.

This dual trend of romantic and adventure travel suggests diverse opportunities on the horizon for the tourism sector. Couples are prioritizing romantic getaways, often making trips to idyllic places like Bali, whereas the younger demographic focuses on outdoor activities and experiences, showing adaptability within consumer behaviors as they align preferences with wellness and nature interaction.

Travel trends reflect significant socio-economic changes as consumers seek unique experiences. Honeymoons continue to be cherished moments for couples, yet the shift toward outdoor sports and adventures signifies broader preferences among diverse traveler groups. Businesses are urged to adapt to these market shifts, ensuring they meet the dual demands of romance and adventure as they gear up for the next few years.
