Honda is issuing a major recall affecting nearly 1.7 million vehicles due to concerns over a defect involving the steering gearbox component. The issue, described as a "sticky" steering problem, could lead to serious safety risks for drivers. With the recall encompassing various models from 2022 to 2025, the automaker has outlined the steps owners need to take to remedy the situation.
The affected models include the 2022-2025 Honda Civic four-door and five-door variants, the 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid, the 2023-2025 Honda CR-V and its Hybrid version, and the 2023-2025 Honda HR-V, among others. Acura models affected by this recall include the 2023-2025 Acura Integra and the 2024-2025 Acura Integra Type S. The problem stems from improperly produced steering gearbox worm wheels, which could swell during use, leading to increased friction and difficulty steering.
Honda's extensive recall was prompted by reports dating back to 2021, with the first indications of trouble surfacing internally at the company around November 2022. By March 2023, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened its own investigation, which intensified by September of the same year. Honda reported receiving 10,328 warranty claims related to this defect, but fortunately, there have been no reported injuries or deaths associated with it.
Honda attributed the issues to environmental factors such as heat and moisture, along with production inconsistencies. Specifically, they cited conditions like insufficient annealing during the manufacturing process of the worm wheel, resulting in too much pressure and insufficient lubrication between the worm wheel and worm gear. This malfunction can complicate steering by making it feel unusually resistant for drivers.
With safety being the top priority, Honda is urging all owners of affected vehicles to get their cars checked at authorized dealerships. Starting November, Honda will reach out to registered owners of the implicated models via mail, instructing them to schedule repair appointments. The fix does not involve software updates; instead, technicians will need to replace the existing worm gear spring and thoroughly apply lubrication to the affected components.
If any owners of these vehicles have already incurred expenses for repairs related to the steering issue prior to the recall announcement, they may be eligible for reimbursement under the NHTSA's guidelines. On the commercial front, Honda continues to maintain strong sales, having sold over 1.3 million vehicles across both its Honda and Acura brands just this year.
