Hollywood is mourning the loss of Diane Delano, the talented actress best known for her captivating roles on the acclaimed series Northern Exposure and Popular. Delano passed away on December 13 at the age of 67 after battling cancer, as confirmed by her representative Dennis Sevier.
"When Diane entered any room, you knew she was there! She was full of life and loved being an actor. She will be missed," Sevier stated to People on December 16.
A Los Angeles native, Diane Delano gained widespread fame for her role as Officer Barbara Semanski on Northern Exposure, which aired on CBS from 1990 to 1995. The show, set in the remote Alaskan town of Cicely, won seven Emmy Awards during its original run, showcasing Delano's outstanding performance over 12 episodes.
Delano's passion for acting began early; she started at the age of six, influenced by her grandfather, Myrtland Vivian LaVarre, who was convinced by legendary director Cecil B. DeMille to change his name to John Merton upon moving to Hollywood. This familial connection embedded Delano deeply within the entertainment industry, with her cousin Rick Sparks commenting on the early visits they made to watch their uncle, actor Lane Bradford, on set. "Although it was in her DNA, I believe those early studio visits cemented Diane’s love for a life within the industry," Sparks shared.
After her success on Northern Exposure, Delano continued to shine on television, landing roles on various popular shows such as Days of Our Lives, Mom, Two and a Half Men, and ER. She also starred as the stern science teacher Bobbi Glass on Popular, co-created by Ryan Murphy, which premiered on the WB Network from 1999 to 2001. Delano's ability to bring sharp wit and comic timing to each character made her unforgettable, with friend and fellow actress Stepfanie Kramer stating, "She was big and bold and brought her sharp wit and perfect comic timing to every role. Her earthy and raucous presence enabled her to always own the room. She was one of a kind."
Aside from her live-action roles, Delano contributed her voice to numerous animated series, including Rugrats, Teen Titans, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and American Dad!, showcasing her versatility as both on-screen and voice talent.
Delano’s film career was also prolific. She appeared alongside Tom Hanks in the comedy The Ladykillers and had memorable roles in films like Miracle Mile, The Wicker Man (2006), and A Mighty Wind. Her last credited role was as Sister Beech in the 2006 remake of The Wicker Man, and she felt at home with her recent work on the musical comedy Paradise: A Town of Sinners and Saints, released earlier this year on streaming platforms.
Throughout her career of over 40 years, Delano accrued various accolades, including the Indie Series Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the made-for-TV movie Fumbling Thru the Pieces. She also earned the Los Angeles Film Award for Best Ensemble for her involvement with Relish.
Her warm personality and remarkable talent have left an indelible mark on Hollywood. With triumphs from early on through her latest engagements, Diane Delano will be remembered for her contributions to the entertainment industry and her ability to connect with audiences.
