Holland America Launches Celestial Cruises For 2026

Experience the Northern Lights and solar eclipses on unique voyages across Europe

Holland America Line (HAL) has announced an enticing lineup of cruise itineraries for 2026, structured around celestial events such as the Northern Lights, solar eclipses, and the summer solstice. This initiative aims to cater to adventure travelers eager to witness spectacular natural phenomena from the comfort of a cruise ship.

The cruise line's Chief Commercial Officer, Beth Bodensteiner, explained that the new routes were inspired by the success of HAL’s 2024 eclipse cruises, which had garnered significant interest and excitement among guests. Starting July 31, 2024, travelers can book these extraordinary celestial cruises, providing opportunities to experience some of the world’s most awe-inspiring sights.

Among the most anticipated events is the total solar eclipse scheduled for August 12, 2026. Holland America is setting its ships along the eclipse's path of totality. For this occasion, three of their ships, the Oosterdam, Nieuw Statendam, and Zuiderdam, will strategically position themselves in prime viewing areas. The Oosterdam will offer a Mediterranean journey from Spain, while the Nieuw Statendam focuses on Northern Europe. Meanwhile, Zuiderdam will embark on a 35-day "Voyage of the Vikings" cruise, giving guests unique perspectives during this once-in-a-lifetime event.

The "Voyage of the Vikings" begins on July 18, traveling from Boston and including destinations in Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and the Netherlands. It enables passengers to delve into the history of the Vikings while ensuring an up-close view of the eclipse positioned off the western coast of Iceland.

As for the Nieuw Statendam, it will host a 28-day roundtrip cruise from Dover or Rotterdam, allowing guests to catch the eclipse’s totality while exploring the stunning landscapes of Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland.

For those inclined toward the Mediterranean, the August 9 trip aboard the Oosterdam will see the ship navigating Spanish waters in anticipation of the solar eclipse. This particular cruise stops at vibrant ports including Barcelona, Alicante, Corsica, Rome, and Montenegro, ensuring passengers enjoy a blend of celestial wonder and cultural exploration.

Joining this stellar lineup are the Northern Lights cruises. With an active aurora forecast in 2026, HAL utilizes its Rotterdam and Nieuw Statendam ships to provide guests the chance to chase auroras above the Arctic Circle. These voyages include an overnight stay in Alta, a location renowned for its excellent Northern Lights visibility, and extended times spent above the Arctic Circle.

Passengers eager to witness the Northern Lights can look forward to wake-up calls when the aurora borealis is in full view. The first of these special journeys departs on October 4, 2026, from Rotterdam to Amsterdam, embarking on a 14-day adventure through Norway, including Lerwick in the Shetland Islands and several stunning Norwegian ports.

A second option aboard the Nieuw Statendam will set sail from Dover to Rotterdam on October 16 for a 15-day Northern Lights cruise, visiting a similar route as the previous journey.

Moreover, travelers interested in experiencing the longest daylight hours attributed to the summer solstice can join a 14-day cruise aboard the Nieuw Statendam above the Arctic Circle on June 21, 2026. Ports of call will include various remarkable locations ensuring the longest day of the year is celebrated in true style.

Each itinerary is designed to blend leisure with educational opportunities. For example, the solar eclipse cruises will feature lectures by scientific experts, themed activities, and provisions including eclipse glasses to ensure guests can safely witness these spectacular phenomena.

Holland America is not only offering once-in-a-lifetime experiences but catering these voyages to enhance guest enjoyment through themed programming related to the celestial events. The recent successful run of their 2024 solar eclipse cruises fueled interest in continuing such immersive guest experiences.

The community is eager to see how HAL’s commitment to creating extraordinary experiences will resonate with travelers, especially considering the increased emphasis on experiential vacations in recent years. By combining the natural allure of celestial events with luxury accommodations and exceptional service, Holland America is poised to draw a diverse range of travelers looking to make lasting memories aboard their ships.

With bookings for these celestial cruises commencing soon, potential passengers should prepare to reserve their spots early. The anticipation for these specialized journeys indicates that 2026 will be a remarkable year for cruising, particularly for those wishing to incorporate awe-inspiring astronomical events into their travel plans.
