Hofstra Softball Triumphs Over UMBC With 4-2 Victory

Strong pitching and strategic hits fuel Hofstra's comeback against UMBC ahead of CAA series with Delaware.

Baltimore, MD – The Hofstra softball team showed resilience and skill on March 19, 2025, defeating UMBC with a score of 4-2 at The Diamond at UMBC. This victory highlighted the impressive pitching duo of Emma Falen and Carley Ernst, who combined for 11 strikeouts and permitted only two hits throughout the game.

The contest began with UMBC taking an early lead, as their bats connected for a two-run home run, putting the home team ahead 2-0. However, Hofstra quickly responded, demonstrating the tenacity that has been vital for their morale this season. In the second inning, Mackenzie Fitzgerald initiated the rally with a key double to right center. Following this, she advanced to third base due to one of the four wild pitches thrown by the Retrievers.

Seizing the moment, Alanna Morse stepped up to the plate and belted her second home run of the season, leveling the score at 2-2. As if that was not enough, after Carmella Gallagher was hit by a pitch, she advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches. In a crucial momentum swing, Gallagher scored the go-ahead run thanks to the fourth wild pitch from UMBC in that inning. With this, Hofstra took a 3-2 lead.

Emma Falen, after allowing two hits and a walk in the first inning, found her rhythm, pitching three consecutive hitless innings and retiring nine batters in a row. Impressively, Falen recorded five strikeouts during this span. Carley Ernst took over in the fifth inning, continuing with the momentum and striking out three while not allowing any Retrievers on base for the remainder of the game.

Hofstra's offense wasn't done yet. In the seventh inning, Chelsea Villar contributed to the score with a solo home run that struck the foul pole in left field, increasing the lead to 4-2. This was Villar's second home run of the year, adding more firepower to the Pride's lineup.

Dahlia Palacio also stood out, finishing the game with a strong performance by going 2-for-4 at the plate, which included a double. Not only that, but she also showcased her speed with a stolen base. Morse finished with two RBIs and a walk, proving to be a standout in the game.

This win improves Hofstra's record to 4-19, while UMBC now sits at 6-19. The matchup marked a significant moment for Hofstra, highlighting the team’s potential for growth in the upcoming games. With this victory, Hofstra continues to build its confidence as they prepare to host Delaware in a three-game CAA series starting on March 21 at 5 p.m.

Notably, this victory places Hofstra at an even 2-2 all-time against UMBC. Falen's impressive pitching has seen her strike out 21 batters in her last three outings, demonstrating her capability as a formidable pitcher. Additionally, this game represented Palacio's third consecutive game with a double, solidifying her role as a key player in the lineup.

As Hofstra heads into the series against Delaware, the Pride not only look to capitalize on their recent success but also to gain momentum moving forward in the season. The combination of strong pitching and a powerful offense gives them a fighting chance to make waves this spring.
