Baltimore, MD – The Hofstra softball team showed resilience and skill on March 19, 2025, defeating UMBC with a score of 4-2 at The Diamond at UMBC. This victory highlighted the impressive pitching duo of Emma Falen and Carley Ernst, who combined for 11 strikeouts and permitted only two hits throughout the game.
The contest began with UMBC taking an early lead, as their bats connected for a two-run home run, putting the home team ahead 2-0. However, Hofstra quickly responded, demonstrating the tenacity that has been vital for their morale this season. In the second inning, Mackenzie Fitzgerald initiated the rally with a key double to right center. Following this, she advanced to third base due to one of the four wild pitches thrown by the Retrievers.
Seizing the moment, Alanna Morse stepped up to the plate and belted her second home run of the season, leveling the score at 2-2. As if that was not enough, after Carmella Gallagher was hit by a pitch, she advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches. In a crucial momentum swing, Gallagher scored the go-ahead run thanks to the fourth wild pitch from UMBC in that inning. With this, Hofstra took a 3-2 lead.
Emma Falen, after allowing two hits and a walk in the first inning, found her rhythm, pitching three consecutive hitless innings and retiring nine batters in a row. Carley Ernst took over in the fifth inning, continuing with the momentum and striking out three while not allowing any Retrievers on base for the remainder of the game.
