Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line Named One Of 2025's Best

Time Magazine honors metro line 1 as a top global destination, showcasing urban progress in Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh City’s metro line 1 has been recognized as one of the top 100 greatest places of 2025 by Time Magazine, marking a significant milestone for Vietnam's urban infrastructure and tourism.

The announcement came as Time Magazine unveiled its prestigious list of the top 100 destinations for 2025, featuring the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien metro line as the sole representative from Vietnam. This recognition showcases the metro line’s appeal and potential to enhance urban mobility in one of Southeast Asia's most bustling cities.

In operation since December 2024, the metro line spans a total length of 19.7 kilometers, comprising 2.6 kilometers of underground tracks, three underground stations, and 11 elevated stops. The project, which involved a total investment of nearly 44 trillion VND (approximately 1.9 billion USD), aims to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution in Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Time, the metro line is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for residents and provide a convenient transportation option for tourists. The line features 17 trains, each capable of accommodating 930 passengers, with ticket prices ranging from 7,000 VND to 20,000 VND for cash transactions, and slightly lower for cashless payments.

Since its soft launch until its official inauguration on March 9, 2025, the metro has already served over 5 million passengers, demonstrating its immediate impact on daily commutes and city navigation.

Time Magazine’s evaluation criteria for its top 100 destinations include relevance, impact, innovation, and success. The inclusion of Ho Chi Minh City’s metro line highlights its modern design and efficiency, positioning it alongside other prominent attractions in Asia, such as the Zebun Nessa Mosque in Bangladesh and the Nintendo Museum in Japan.

Experts believe that the successful operation of metro line 1 not only marks a significant achievement for Ho Chi Minh City but also paves the way for future developments in the city's public transportation network. The city plans to complete a total of seven metro lines by 2035, with an ambitious goal of extending the network to 355 kilometers and an estimated investment of over 40 billion USD.

Moreover, metro line 2 is currently in the final stages of funding and is expected to be completed by April 2025. This new line will further expand the public transport system, enhancing connectivity across the city and facilitating easier access to various attractions, including the Ben Thanh Market and the bustling Nguyen Hue Walking Street.

Ho Chi Minh City’s metro project is not just a transportation initiative; it represents a broader vision of urban development and modernization. The successful implementation of these metro lines is anticipated to transform the city into a more efficient, environmentally friendly, and tourist-friendly destination.

The recognition from Time Magazine comes at a crucial time as Vietnam continues to invest in its infrastructure to attract international tourists and improve urban living conditions. The city’s efforts to modernize its transportation system reflect its ambitions to position itself as a leading economic and cultural hub in the region.

As the city moves forward with plans for additional metro lines, including lines 8, 9, and 10, the overarching goal remains clear: to create a comprehensive and modern public transport system that meets the needs of both residents and visitors. By 2035, the total length of the metro system is expected to reach 510 kilometers, a testament to Ho Chi Minh City’s commitment to sustainable urban development.

In conclusion, the inclusion of Ho Chi Minh City’s metro line 1 in Time Magazine's top 100 destinations for 2025 not only highlights the city's achievements in infrastructure but also sets the stage for future growth and development. As the metro system expands, it promises to enhance the urban experience for millions, making the vibrant city even more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
