Accor Stadium, once known primarily for hosting sporting events, is set to transform dramatically as it prepares to host the inaugural Race of Champions on March 7 and 8, 2025. This exciting event is anticipated to draw motorsport fans from around the globe, not only for its competitive spirit but also for the storied lineup of participating drivers.
More than 200 staff members have worked tirelessly to create the stunning one-kilometre asphalt track, which includes innovative features such as a 43-meter crossover bridge. The construction of the circuit involved over 4500 tonnes of road base and asphalt, delivered via more than 400 semi-trailer movements. This massive undertaking encapsulates more than just the physical track; it highlights the collaborative effort fueling the event, with numerous local and national suppliers playing key roles.
"Race Of Champions is the most unique event we have ever hosted at Accor Stadium," said Stephen Saunders, Group General Manager of Venues New South Wales. "It has been truly amazing to see the transformation of our stadium, and the result is first class." The completion of this track has involved multiple layers including specially-designed Geofabric and finely-tuned adjustments to meet the stadium’s unique curvature.
Fans will witness some of the greatest names in motorsport this weekend, including four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel, 11-time X-Games Gold Medalist Travis Pastrana, and NASCAR legend Kurt Busch. Other notable participants are eight-time Rally World Champion Sébastien Loeb, F1 ace Valtteri Bottas, and seven-time Supercars Champion Jamie Whincup, to name just a few.
The event is being bolstered by significant corporate support from industry giants such as Pirelli, Subaru, and Bang & Olufsen. Each of these companies sees the value of associational marketing, highlighting the unique convergence of talent present at the Race of Champions. Pirelli Motorsport Director Mario Isola expressed, "The Race Of Champions is unique because it sees drivers from various disciplines compete on equal terms, highlighting their talent and providing exciting entertainment."
On the social front, drivers will not only compete for individual applause but also team up for their countries' honor during the ROC Nations Cup on Friday evening. This setup is expected to generate significant excitement among fans as they root for their favorite competitors, conveying national pride on the racing arena. The full driver roster comprises 20 elite contenders who will race head-to-head across six different vehicles. Each driver will compete using the same make and model, emphasizing skills beyond just machinery capability.
ADC Radio and Television is set to broadcast the event live, making it possible for fans unable to attend to still enjoy the high-octane action from home. Adam Cush, Director of Sport Production at Channel 10, remarked, "It's a rare opportunity to witness some of the greatest drivers battle head-to-head, and we can’t wait for fans to experience the intensity and excitement live."
Yet the road leading to this major event hasn’t been entirely smooth. The construction faced unexpected obstacles, including road closures due to significant concerts at the nearby Qudos Bank Arena. This delay could have posed serious challenges for the logistics team, but the crew managed to keep delays to a minimum.
The track will be swiftly dismantled just hours after the final race, with crews tasked to recycle materials before the traditional grass surface undergoes its annual replacement, ensuring the stadium is ready for the upcoming National Rugby League game.
Friday's opening night features the ROC Nations Cup where countries will compete for the title of 'World's Fastest Nation'. Following this, Saturday night will spotlight the 'Champion of Champions' when individual skill is put on display. Approximately 4,000 fans are expected to attend each night, eager to support their teams and watch descending champions clash. Available ticket packages range from general admission to premium seating, signaling the high demand for this once-in-a-lifetime event.
After races conclude, drivers will have the opportunity to interact with fans during meet-and-greet sessions, providing not only thrilling competition but also chances for autographs and shared stories among racing enthusiasts. This weekend culminates with the prestigious title of the Race of Champions, soon following by Australia’s Formula 1 World Championship round slated for the following week, cementing March as a pivotal month for motorsports enthusiasts.
With the preparations nearly complete and the excitement mounting, both fans and participants look forward to this historic showcase of racing excellence. The inaugural Race of Champions promises to deliver unforgettable moments, legendary showdowns, and the chance to witness who will rise as the champion among champions.
