Himachal Pradesh Issues Orange Alert For Heavy Snowfall

A Western Disturbance is expected to bring significant rain and snow, raising safety concerns for travelers and residents alike.

Himachal Pradesh is bracing for adverse weather conditions as the Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert, warning of heavy rain and snowfall across several districts starting from February 20, 2025. The forecast indicates significant precipitation due to the presence of a Western Disturbance, which is expected to cause widespread weather disruptions.

The Orange Alert covers the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi. Snowfall is particularly anticipated at high-altitude locations and popular tourist destinations. Areas such as Kufri, Narkanda, Manali, Solang Valley, Dalhousie, and Sissu may experience light to moderate snowfall, according to reports from the Meteorological Department. Meanwhile, Shimla city and its surroundings can expect light snowfall as well.

According to the weather officials, the adverse conditions are predicted to commence late on February 19 and last until the forenoon of February 21. Heavy snowfall is expected to hit isolated regions of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi districts on February 20, with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms affecting lower regions such as Solan, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, and Una.

With the alert issued, residents are warned about potential hazards including slippery roads, low visibility, and traffic congestion, which could lead to compromised access to local services. Areas such as Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and highlands of Kangra, Chamba, Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, and Sirmaur are also likely to see light to moderate snowfall, with heavy snowfall predicted in specific isolated areas.

"Residents and travelers are advised to drive cautiously, limit outdoor activities, and follow government advisories," the Meteorological department stated. The predicted weather might influence various events, particularly for those planning weddings or rituals for the upcoming Shivratri festival, raising concerns for event organizers amid the changing conditions.

The expected drop in maximum temperature is forecasted to range between 6 to 7 degrees Celsius on February 20, enhancing the chill. This is followed by a slight increase of about 4 to 5 degrees toward February 21 and 22. Minimum temperatures may rise by 3 to 4 degrees on February 20, later seeing another fall by the same margin.

This year, the state has experienced severe dry conditions, with rainfall significantly below normal. From January 1 to February 19, only 29.7 mm of rain has been recorded, which starkly contrasts the average expected rainfall of 145.3 mm. This alarming shortfall has resulted in drought-like conditions across various districts, placing additional strain on already limited water resources.

Though this impending weather system brings hope for alleviating the persistent dry spell, the possible adverse effects on travel and events cannot be overlooked. Wedding planners and devotees celebrating Shivratri are urged to stay vigilant and adaptable, considering alternatives should inclement weather disrupt plans.

"This forecast raises hope for breaking the long dry spell the state has been experiencing," commented local weather experts, aligning with the anticipated weather changes benefiting the region.

Alongside the orange alert, the department has also issued yellow alerts for thunderstorms and lightning across the lower and mid-hills of Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, and Kinnaur on February 20. This broad range of alerts emphasizes the unpredictable nature of Himalayan weather and the necessity for locals and travelers to prepare accordingly.

Authorities have recommended specific guidelines to mitigate risks associated with the anticipated weather. Travel to high-altitude areas should be avoided during heavy snowfall, and those venturing out are advised to drive slowly and carefully, particularly on snow-covered roads.

For everyone planning outdoor activities or events, keeping emergency plans, including alternative venues or arrangements, is strongly encouraged. Staying informed with the latest updates from the Meteorological Department will be key to weathering this storm safely.

With winter's grip still evident, the next few days could lead to significant changes, and everyone is urged to stay safe and informed amid these weather challenges.
