Highway Closures May Disrupt Travel Amid Heavy Snowfall

Motorists advised to stay updated on road conditions and safety measures.

Severe winter weather is expected to impact travel across the Hokuriku region as heavy snowfall leads to potential highway closures. According to the Kinki Regional Development Bureau and NEXCO West Japan, areas including Fukui Prefecture and the Kinki region may experience significant snow accumulation by February 24. Forecasts predict cold air overhead will result not only in snowfall on mountain roads but also accumulation at lower altitudes.

Officials have cautioned drivers to prepare for difficult travel conditions, announcing the probability of road closures on several major highways. The closures may begin at midnight on February 24, with the following sections at risk: the New Meishin Expressway from Takatsuki IC to Kobe JCT and the Hokuriku Expressway from Maruoka IC to Nagahama IC, which are expected to be affected even earlier, potentially soon after midnight.

Alongside the aforementioned highways, other routes such as the Maizuru-Wakasa Expressway from Kasuga IC to Tsuruga JCT and the Kyoto Jukan Road from Sonobe IC to Kameoka IC will likely experience closings between midnight and 6 AM. The Hanshin Expressway No. 7 from Shirakawa JCT to Nishinomiya Yamayama IC, along with the Hanshin Expressway No. 11 from Hotarukai JCT to Ikeda Kibe, have also been marked for potential closures between 6 AM and noon on the same day.

The forecast from local meteorological services highlights the significance of weather conditions leading to snow accumulation and the likelihood of severe disruptions to travel plans. A spokesperson from NEXCO West Japan emphasized, "Road conditions may change based on current weather, and drivers are urged to remain vigilant and flexible with their travel plans."

Travelers are cautioned to avoid unnecessary trips during this adverse weather event, as safety is of utmost importance. The heavy snowfall not only increases traffic risk but can also severely impact emergency response and road maintenance efforts. Motorists should check for real-time updates on road conditions and closures before embarking on their journeys.

Those planning to drive during this period should equip their vehicles with winter gear, including snow tires, and carry emergency supplies. Officials are urging the public to keep informed about potential road closures and to heed the advice of transportation and weather authorities for their safety.

This winter has proven challenging with intermittent heavy snowfall affecting multiple regions across Japan. Communities are reminded of the importance of preparedness and adaptability during such seasonal weather events.
