High School Ekiden Race 2024 Highlights Team Spirit And Resilience

Despite fierce competition, athletes vow to return stronger and more united next year.

The 2024 National High School Ekiden Race unfolded on December 22, showcasing teams from across Japan, culminating at the esteemed Takebishi Stadium Kyoto. This year’s race saw notable performances, but for some schools, claiming the prizes proved elusive.

Nishiwaki Technical High School from Hyogo put forth valiant efforts in the men's competition, which covered seven sections totaling 42.195 kilometers. Although they started with high hopes, finishing 13th was not the coveted result they aimed for. Entering with the fourth-best time from the prefectural qualifiers, the talented twin runners, Ryoki and Akira Niizuma, were determined. Before the race, Ryoki declared, “Two people are one section,” underlining their preparation as a duo. Ryoki, who ran the first section, handed off to Akira, who managed to pull the team up one rank, though their overarching goal of being the best remained just out of reach. Akira, the upcoming captain, pledged, “I want to come back stronger next year.”

Suma Gakuen, also from Hyogo Prefecture, faced similar challenges as they aimed for the top and ended up 16th. Their hopes were high, particularly after they secured fourth place last year. The captain of the team, Masahiro Horino, ran the third section and was pleased to overtake four competitors, momentarily boosting the team to 13th. Despite feeling the pressure of expectations from last year, he said, “The goal inspired us to unite,” hoping his teammates would focus on enjoying the experience rather than the burden of 'revenge' for previous rankings.

The girls' team from Suma Gakuen faced their own set of challenges, finishing 23rd. Comprised primarily of first and second-year students, they had the youthful vigor but also the burden of experience. The team's performances varied, with Seina Kaneko finishing 33rd but feeling the weight of expectations, saying, “I put too much pressure on myself. I want to clear my regret at next year’s event.”

Meanwhile, Toyokawa High School from Aichi Prefecture made waves with the participation of twin sisters, Rinon and Kanon Akitaka. Their team secured 15th place, marking their impressive presence with notable performances as each sister raced through the sections. Rinon shared her experience, reflecting on their unique bond after their run: “I was happy to connect the baton with my sister on this national stage.” Her emphasis on teamwork underscored their youthful determination and connection.

Rinon expressed hopes of matching her personal goals, mentioning, “My aim was to bring it back with one digit.” Despite feeling some remorse for not attaining higher ranks, the sisters celebrated the chance to run together, especially with Kanon’s recovery from previous injuries—“Kanon was often injured the past two years, so we didn’t run together much. But now… she’s really grown, and I felt strong having her share this stage with me.”

Nagano East claimed victory overall, finishing first among the girls’ teams, validating their skills and preparation. The competition was fierce, but it highlighted the spirit of camaraderie and dedication present at these national events.

The stories from the National High School Ekiden Race 2024 remind us not just of the results but of the values gained through such endeavors: resilience, growth, and the perpetual drive to improve. Through struggles and triumphs, these young athletes set the stage for future endeavors, embodying the spirit of high school competition perfectly.
