High Number Of Search And Rescue Calls Plague Wyoming

Hikers now top the list of those needing assistance as rescues continue to trend upward.

Record high numbers of search and rescue calls have been reported across Wyoming, with hikers now topping the list of those needing assistance. According to Teton County Search and Rescue’s end-of-year report, the trend marks a significant shift from the past decade when skiers and snowboarders were the most frequent rescuers.

For 2024, Teton County Search and Rescue recorded its second highest call volume ever, underscoring the increasing number of adventurers exploring the rugged landscapes of Wyoming. "Hikers were the most rescued recreators in 2024," the report noted, confirming the rise of foot travelers as the most at-risk group this past year.

The spike in rescue operations has been partially attributed to the multimillion-dollar helicopter recently acquired by the rescue team. Boss of Teton County Search and Rescue stated, "Search and Rescue attributes the high call volume to its multimillion-dollar helicopter, acquired in October 2023." This new capability has vastly improved the team’s ability to respond quickly to emergencies not only within Teton County but also across the broader region, including Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, and even extending operations to Colorado and Idaho.

The new helicopter's impact is particularly noteworthy, as "those assists nearly doubled flight rescues from 2023," according to the rescue report. The ability to airlift individuals from remote and challenging locations has been game-changing, increasing the success rate of these missions accurately and efficiently.

Annual rescues continue to trend upward as Teton County attracts more visitors and full-time residents flock to its picturesque outdoors. “Annual rescues continue to trend up as the county grows and more people from around the country file to the backcountry,” stated officials from Teton County. With breathtaking landscapes and appealing outdoor activities, it’s clear why this area has become immensely popular among outdoor enthusiasts.

Beyond the local concerns, the report reflects statewide trends. "Statewide, 329 search and rescue missions were reported in 2024, with the vast majority occurring within the state’s western mountains and the Bighorns," revealed the Wyoming Information Sharing Platform (WISP). This statistic mirrors the shifts seen locally, where hiking is becoming increasingly prominent among recreational activities.

Though hiking has become the focus of rescue efforts, the responsible enjoyment of the outdoors is among many issues spurring discussion within these communities. Concerns about preparedness and safety continue to be significant topics for both residents and officials, especially with rising numbers year on year. This trend raises questions about whether the increase can be simply attributed to more people going outdoors or if it also reflects changes in cultural attitudes toward outdoor activities, accessibility, and individual preparedness.

Lasting effects of these changes could include not just increased funding opportunities for search and rescue teams—like the investment made with the new helicopter—but also educational outreach programs aimed at enhancing individual outdoor skills and preparedness. Educators within these programs advocate for appropriate gear, knowledge about the area, and awareness of one’s physical limitations before heading out.

Experts stress the importance of staying educated and prepared, especially as data shows the demographic of adventurers coming to enjoy Wyoming's outdoors is not just local but increasingly national. It appears the spirit of adventure is drawing more people than ever to the rugged natural beauty of the region, and with this increase, both the enjoyment and challenge of the outdoors requires heightened awareness and respect.

With outdoor recreation booming, Teton County Search and Rescue vows to continue to adapt to the changing needs of the community. Teton County officials encourage individuals planning adventures to take necessary precautions, ensuring everyone enjoys the splendor of the great Wyoming outdoors safely.
