Higashi Fukuoka High School Advances To Semifinals After Epic PK Shootout

The team prevails against Shizuoka Gakuen High School, marking their first semifinal berth since 2015.

Higashi Fukuoka High School has made its mark once again on the national soccer scene by reaching the semifinals of the 103rd National High School Soccer Championship. This remarkable achievement follows their intense quarterfinal match against Shizuoka Gakuen High School, which took place on January 4 at Uvance Todoroki Stadium.

The highly anticipated match ended in a 0-0 stalemate after 80 minutes of play, leading to penalties where Higashi Fukuoka triumphed 5-4. This victory marks Higashi Fukuoka's return to the semifinals for the first time since their championship win back in 2015.

Despite facing the formidable Shizuoka Gakuen, known for its storied success—including two national championship titles—the match demonstrated both teams' defensive prowess. Throughout regulation time, Higashi Fukuoka was under significant pressure but managed to keep the scoreline intact through disciplined defending and effective goalkeeping.

Shizuoka Gakuen attempted to assert their dominance early, registering three shots on goal compared to Higashi Fukuoka's none by halftime. Players such as DF Noda Hiroto and DF Uezawa Riku led the charge for Shizuoka, continuously pushing forward. Nevertheless, they were thwarted time and again by Higashi Fukuoka's resolute backline.

After the break, the momentum shifted somewhat, but neither side could break the deadlock. Higashi Fukuoka struggled to create clear scoring opportunities, with only one shot from set pieces and none from open play dominating the second half.

With the match heading to penalties, both teams left it all on the field. Each team's first three penalty takers found the net, but the match turned dramatic during the fourth round when Shizuoka captain Noda missed his shot, sending shockwaves through the stadium. The tension escalated when Higashi Fukuoka's Shinbai Sota also missed, but the tide turned again as Shizuoka's Dainin Kōyō failed to convert their next attempt.

It was Higashi Fukuoka, through the cool head of Utsunomiya Muku, who sealed the victory, ensuring their place among the final four teams.

Shizuoka Gakuen's defeat adds another chapter to their bittersweet tournament history, as this marks their fifth consecutive elimination via penalties and their first failure to advance past the quarterfinals since 2019. The loss is especially hard to bear, considering they had again reached knockout stages after strong performances throughout the competition.

"This result is extremely disappointing for us, but we have to regroup and evaluate where we can improve for next time," remarked Shizuoka Gakuen head coach after the match. He emphasized the need for mental fortitude as they head back to the drawing board.

Higashi Fukuoka will now face Maebashi Ikuei High School on January 11, with hopes riding high as they seek their first national title since 2015. The anticipation among fans is palpable, and many are eagerly awaiting what should be another riveting matchup.

This victory not only signifies Higashi Fukuoka's competitiveness on the national stage but also reflects the increasing standard of high school soccer across Japan, where young athletes continually push the boundaries of skill and sportsmanship.

Looking forward, both teams will focus on their respective journeys as they look to build on this experience for future competitions. For Higashi Fukuoka, the semifinals not only present another opportunity to chase glory but also serve as motivation for younger players considering high school soccer as their career path.
