Hezbollah Battles Amid Israeli Military Advances

Escalation follows the death of Hassan Nasrallah and renewed conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border

The tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have reached new heights as Israeli military operations intensify against the Iran-backed militant group, particularly following the death of its longtime leader, Hassan Nasrallah. The recent escalation is marked by airstrikes, ground incursions, and significant military maneuvers along the Israel-Lebanon border. Residents on both sides are facing increasing dangers, with thousands being displaced due to violent exchanges and military actions.

On September 28, 2024, Hezbollah confirmed the death of Nasrallah, which many believe is part of Israel's broader strategy to dismantle the leadership of the militant organization. Experts suggest his death, alongside other top officials, is indicative of Israel's aggressive campaign targeting Hezbollah’s capabilities and leadership structure. This development, combined with the backdrop of the war with Hamas, has positioned Hezbollah under intense scrutiny and pressure.

Originally founded during the Lebanese Civil War after Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in 1982, Hezbollah, meaning "Party of God" in Arabic, was birthed from the desire to resist Israeli occupation. Over the years, it has transformed from purely military roots to holding significant political power within Lebanon by securing seats in parliament and forging alliances with various political parties. These alliances ensured Hezbollah not only maintained its militant operations but also its influence over Lebanese governance.

Despite its political maneuvering, the recent military operations have raised questions about Hezbollah's capacity to respond effectively. Israeli forces commenced what they described as "limited, localized" operations against Hezbollah targets close to the Lebanese border. These operations, which include ground raids supported by airstrikes and artillery, have been underway since September when U.S. officials confirmed small ground raids aimed at specific Hezbollah infrastructure.

With the death of several top commanders, the leadership structure within Hezbollah is facing upheaval. Naim Kassem, acting leader, has expressed the group’s readiness to continue the fight against Israel, often citing resilience and adaptability. New leaders are stepping up to replace those lost, maintaining the organization’s framework and ideology, which is heavily influenced by Iran.

Hezbollah's involvement extends beyond military capacity; it operates numerous social programs, providing healthcare, education, and other public services to its supporters. This approach has cemented its standing among its constituency, particularly within the Shiite community, though this support has started to wane due to various political and social escalations within Lebanon.

The group's popularity has fluctuated over the years, particularly as anti-Syrian sentiments grew following the assassination of Prime Minister Rafic Hariri in 2005. This event ignited significant protests against both Hezbollah and Syrian influences within Lebanon, demonstrating various factions within the country opposed to the militant group's dominance.

Recent polling data reveals dwindling trust for Hezbollah among the broader Lebanese population, particularly among Sunni and Christian communities. Although around 85% of Shiites still express support for the group, overall trust has significantly eroded, signaling possible discontent with its militant stance amid mounting political corruption and economic struggles.

The series of Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon aims not only to weaken Hezbollah's military capability but also to destabilize its leadership structure. Reports indicate significant casualties, with over 1,000 people killed over the past weeks—many of whom are civilians—including recent strikes targeting residential areas, raising concerns of humanitarian crises.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah's military capabilities appear to remain intact, with the group retaliatory launching hundreds of rockets daily, showcasing its extensive military network and capacity to strike back, albeit much of this firepower is intercepted or directed toward open areas. This back-and-forth exchange of fire has resulted in anxiety along the Israel-Lebanon border, forcing thousands from their homes.

International reactions have varied, with calls for cease-fires coming from the U.S., France, and other nations, urging both sides to reconsider their military strategies and prioritize humanitarian concerns. Nevertheless, these calls are often met with indifference, particularly from Israeli leadership seeking continuing military successes over Hezbollah.

Currently, humanitarian agencies are bracing for stretched resources as many Lebanese communities are on edge, anticipating broader conflict as Israeli forces show no signs of retreating from their operations against Hezbollah. The stability of the region continues to hang by a thread, as both governmental and militant actions redefine the power dynamics within Lebanon and its interactions with Israel.
