On December 17, Jill and Brenden Plemmons were taken by surprise when Jill went unexpectedly to labor right outside their home, as they prepared to head to the hospital. Culminated by the urgency of the situation, Jill called 911 for help. Thankfully, dispatcher Ashley Wonnacott answered the call. Through her guidance, the couple managed to welcome their daughter Amelia safely on their driveway, with Brenden even exclaiming, “Oh my God, the baby’s here. The baby’s here!”
"We would have not been able to do it without her," Jill later told CNN, praising Wonnacott for her calm and reassuring presence. The dispatcher instructed them to gather supplies, such as towels and blankets, and kept Jill focused throughout the birthing process.
Dispatcher Wonnacott herself reflected on the experience, stating, "It can be tricky, especially with something you’ve never done before, but we are trained, and it helps a lot. Mom was cool to work with.”
Meanwhile, nearly 300 miles away, another emergency incident unfolded with starkly different circumstances. On December 8, Richard Fluegel Sr., 60, went missing, prompting concern from family members. The situation escalated when his son, Richard Fluegel Jr., called 911 at around 11:30 PM from the parking lot of the sheriff’s office, stating he wanted to “turn in a deceased body.” Police initially believed it might be due to natural causes but soon discovered it was much more sinister.
The deputies found Fluegel Sr.’s body inside their vehicle with gunshot wounds, leading to the arrest of Fluegel Jr. He is currently facing several charges, including felony murder and tampering with evidence. Livingston County Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty noted, "This was an isolated incident... it doesn’t make sense to us." His comments encapsulated the baffling nature of the case.

Officials announced the development of next-generation 911, which modernizes how emergency calls are handled by allowing multimedia communications such as texts and images to come through along with voice calls. Dorothy Spears-Dean, Ph.D., from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, explained, "Next-generation 911 technology is...to handle multimedia communications..." This upgrade will significantly improve response times and help telecommunicators respond more effectively during emergencies.
Another facet of enhancing 911 services recently occurred in Bismarck, North Dakota, where state radio began directly transferring mental health emergency calls to the 988 crisis hotline. This development acknowledges the unique needs of individuals experiencing mental health crises and helps connect them to the appropriate services without overwhelming traditional emergency responders.
"If you are feeling like you are going to hurt yourself...there’s a lot of help there," said Miranda Jangula, State Radio Deputy Director, emphasizing the focus on mental health support.
