On March 16, 2025, TV Tokyo will broadcast the exciting and adventurous show titled "Emergency SOS! Pond Water Clean-Out Great Operation," starting at 6:30 PM. This episode showcases the unique task of draining the water at Himeji Castle, which is not only recognized as a National Treasure but also proudly stands as Japan's first World Cultural Heritage site. Remarkably, this will be the first time anyone has carried out such work at the historic site after 400 years.
MC Atsushi Tamura will guide viewers through the castle, highlighting its impressive defensive measures and the structure's historical significance. The team's mission is ambitious as they search for valuable artifacts, particularly the coveted ‘Himeji Sword Inscription’ associated with the Sakai family, which dates back to the end of the Edo period. Among those participating are Jin Terajima and Nana Hirano, adding to the excitement of this monumental occasion.
Himeji Castle features a moat filled with approximately 50,000 tons of water, and, until this event, there has been no systematic water drainage survey conducted at the site. This lack of exploration poses questions about the hidden treasures or remnants lurking beneath the surface. During the investigation, Tamura discovered broken tiles, one of which bore unfamiliar patterns, sparking intrigue about the castle's storied past.
Adding to the thrilling adventures of the episode, the crew will also investigate a pond located in Ushiku City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Residents have reported the shocking discovery of what has been labeled the 'pond of 500 turtles.' This situation reflects the highest localized turtle infestation seen nationwide. The adjustment pond, established 24 years ago, had initially been devoid of life; now, it has transformed dramatically.
MC Naoki Tanaka, along with actors Terunosuke Takezai and Toshihisa Kayahara, will plunge right from the onset of the event, combing through the murky waters of the Ushiku City pond. Despite their best efforts, the original plan to capture the turtles faced challenges as they came up against many invasive species. Among the highlights of their capture efforts, Ibaraki native Suzuki Nana stumbled upon what can only be described as the 'turtle den,' indicating where these reptiles had settled.
Meanwhile, the show also features the first-ever water drainage operation at the Isenoyama ancient tomb located in Kawanishi Town, Nara Prefecture. This large grave, which is approximately 200 meters long and was constructed between the late 4th century and early 5th century, ranks among the top 20 largest tombs within Nara Prefecture, home to roughly 10,000 ancient mausoleums. The tomb is credited as the burial site of someone of princely status.
Atsuko Maeda will join the team for the first time, contributing her enthusiasm and experience as they work to investigate the tomb's floodwaters and search for potential treasures from 1600 years ago. Notable participants include Kaito Takechi, the muscle-bound icon from THE RAMPAGE from EXILE TRIBE, and Aimyon Tanaka, last year's winner of the prestigious Japan Poetry Grand Prize.
After draining the tomb’s surrounding water, the crew anticipates the remarkable discoveries stemming from this ancient resting place, which promise to offer insights not only about its provenance but possibly unearthing treasures steeped deeply in history.
Further along, the episode will explore Benten Pond situated near Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake. There, reports of a 'monster' measuring over one meter have stirred excitement and concern among locals. Many have speculated on the identity of this supposedly monstrous creature, leading the show’s hosts to declare the pond worthy of investigation.
Sasage Masaru and Kato Fumika, the former center of Nogizaka46, will join the expedition for the first time as they dig deep within Benten Pond. The experience for Fumika proves demanding, particularly as she negotiates the added challenge of wearing heavy gear; yet, the tension mounts as they seek the truth behind the reported sightings. Will it be a native species such as the alligator gar or perhaps some invasive monster?
Throughout the show, cast members display grit as they contend with the elements and occasional misfortunes during their quests. From Maeda's delightful energy to Takeda's physical prowess, the participants create dynamic interactions full of comedic moments and camaraderie, often redefining themselves outside their starlit roles.
Producer Koji Kuwahara encapsulates the spirit of the episode, emphasizing the remarkable creatures and rare artefacts discovered throughout the investigations, describing it as the show's most engaging episode to date. With Himeji Castle standing as Japan's pinnacle of historical prominence and ancient tombs yielding unprecedented treasures, the segment highlights the value and respect for cultural heritage.
"Since the launching of the program, we have unprecedented opportunities for encounters with extraordinary lives and treasures! This will absolutely be action-packed from beginning to end!" remarked Kuwahara.
The show, airing on various networks throughout Japan, promises to be available on the nationwide streaming service TVer, allowing everyone to partake in this riveting exploration and see what secrets lie underneath the waters of these historic sites. With the vigor and personalities of participants like Terajima, Hirano, Maeda, and others, expect unforgettable moments as they navigate the unknown depths of nature imbued with storytelling adventure and the significance of conservation around us.
