Heavy snowfall is set to impact traffic on expressways across Japan, prompting preventive measures from authorities. NEXCO East Japan announced on December 27, 2023, the likelihood of temporary road closures on major routes, including the Kanetsu Expressway and Joshinetsu Expressway, due to intense cold weather conditions.
According to the announcement made at 6:30 PM local time, the closures will target sections of the Kanetsu Expressway between the Shibukawa Ikaho Interchange and the Muikamachi Interchange, as well as the Joshinetsu Expressway from the Nagano Interchange to the Joetsu Takada Interchange. The predicted time frame for these preventative closures spans from the evening of December 27 to midnight on December 28.
Officials have urged the public to stay alert and check the latest weather forecasts and road traffic information, which may require reconsideration of travel plans and to avoid the snowfall regions. They noted the risk of traffic jams increasing substantially if just one vehicle becomes stranded on the expressways. This can lead to widespread disruptions, not only during peak travel times but also affecting parallel routes on general national highways.
NEXCO East Japan emphasized the importance of monitoring transportation updates and advised both drivers and logistics companies to revisit operational plans amid forecasts predicting significant snowfall across extensive areas, especially affecting Niigata Prefecture and surrounding regions.
To keep motorists informed, NEXCO will provide updates through various channels, including its official website, LINE app, and X (formerly Twitter). This initiative aims to disseminate timely information and support drivers with any unforeseen closures or adverse weather conditions.
"During heavy snowfall, it is recommended to refrain from traveling, as unexpected accidents or sudden changes due to weather can necessitate immediate road closures," stated NEXCO East Japan.
Authorities are reiterative about the potential for logistics disruptions and longer travel times, ensuring all users are well-informed throughout the heavy snowfall period. So far, the officials have advised travelers to remain flexible with their plans and to check relevant sites for traffic and weather updates likely to shape travel this winter season.
