Heavy Snowfall Expected For Christmas Across Southern Quebec

Quebecers brace for up to 15 centimeters of snow, impacting holiday travel plans.

Heavy snowfall is expected to blanket southern Quebec just before Christmas, bringing both the promise of a picturesque holiday scene and significant travel challenges for residents. With forecasts predicting between 10 to 15 centimeters of snow across various regions, many residents are preparing for what is being dubbed by some as the quintessential white Christmas.

According to Environnement Canada, the snowfall is anticipated to begin affecting the area Monday afternoon. This weather system, characterized by light, powdery snow with minimal wind, will start to reach regions including Montreal, the Montérégie, and Lanaudière by late afternoon. "Une accumulation de 10 à 15 centimètres de neige pourrait perturber les déplacements, particulièrement au début du temps des fêtes," warned Environnement Canada, emphasizing the potential difficulty for travelers.

Météorologist Michèle Fleury noted, "Ça va être une belle neige poudreuse et légère, avec pas trop de vent." This kind of snow is often favored by snowplow operators, as it doesn't pack down as much, reducing the risks of icy conditions. Nonetheless, drivers should remain cautious. Visibility may be reduced, and road conditions could quickly change as snow begins to accumulate.

The snowfall is expected to continue overnight, with reports of road incidents already surfacing due to slick conditions, particularly on highways 20, 40, and 15. Authorities advise motorists to remain vigilant, adjusting their driving speed according to changing conditions. The Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) has noted the importance of reducing speed during poor visibility and slippery conditions, reminding drivers of the penalties associated with dangerous driving.

With the festive season fast approaching, many families are planning road trips to celebrate the holidays. Local authorities have issued advisories, recommending avoiding unnecessary travel on Tuesday morning, when conditions may be at their worst. Drummondville, for example, has announced overnight parking bans to facilitate snow removal operations.

The northeastern and eastern parts of Quebec are also expecting some wintry weather, with regions like Gaspésie and Trois-Rivières set to receive lighter snow amounts, alongside breaks of sunshine. On Christmas Day, it is anticipated the snow will cease, giving way to clearer skies but under significantly colder temperatures, only reaching about -7 degrees Celsius.

For those who need to travel, CAA-Québec is reminding drivers to adapt their driving to the wintery conditions. "Respecter cette consigne permet à vos pneus de mieux adhérer à la chaussée," cautioned the organization. Maintaining visibility is key; drivers should use their headlights and clear snow from their vehicles before heading out.

Snowfalls like this are not all bad news; they also provide the backdrop for numerous winter activities. Families may find it the perfect opportunity to engage in sledding, snowshoeing, or simply enjoying the beauty of fresh snow. Snow enthusiasts around Quebec are eagerly awaiting this festive white cover, which many feel brings joy and cheer to the holiday season.

Despite the beauty the snow brings, the complications of travel mean individuals must take care not to let holiday excitement impair their judgment on the roads. Whether it's adjusting travel plans or allowing extra time for commutes, being proactive about safety is the best course of action this winter.

Snow is expected to taper off by late Tuesday morning, with predictions of sunshine returning throughout the rest of the week. The forecast suggests drier conditions will soon accompany the cold, allowing Quebecers to celebrate Christmas under sunny skies, albeit at chilly temperatures.

With the holiday spirit fully occupying people’s hearts, many Quebecers look forward to what will surely be another unique Christmas. Wishing everyone safe travels and happy holidays!
