Heavy Snow Causes Highway Closures Across Nagano Prefecture

Preventive traffic measures enacted by authorities to safeguard public safety amid severe winter weather.

Heavy snowfalls have prompted authorities to impose preventive closures across major highways and roads within Nagano Prefecture as of March 3, 2025. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, alongside NEXCO (East Japan Expressway), initiated these closures due to concerns about safety and traffic management amid the severe weather conditions.

The specific roads affected include major sections such as the Joshinetsu Expressway, with closures between Ueda-Sugadaira interchange (IC) and Fujioka IC, as well as along various segments of the Nagano Expressway. Other significant routes affected are National Route 18, which includes the Usui Bypass and Karuizawa Bypass, and National Route 19 between Nagano City and Azumino City.

According to NBS Nagano Broadcasting, "Heavy snow has caused significant disruptions on our roadways, forcing us to implement preventive measures for public safety." This indicates the heightened concerns as officials continue to monitor the situation closely.

The decision for these closures was made early on the morning of March 3, when authorities assessed the adverse weather impact. Traffic management is being prioritized to prevent accidents and maintain safety for both residents and travelers. Many of these major arteries are key routes for both local and regional travel, making the closures particularly impactful.

Travelers heading to and from Nagano Prefecture are advised to stay updated on road conditions, as additional closures may occur if snowfall continues at the current intensity. NEXCO and other transportation agencies are regularly updating their information resources to keep motorists informed.

Residents have also been cautioned to take necessary precautions during this severe weather, which may continue throughout the day. Ensuring vehicles are equipped for winter conditions, avoiding unnecessary travel, and staying informed through local news channels are key recommendations.

Authorities are working to assess the situation continuously and restore normal operations as soon as it is safe to do so. For now, they urge everyone to remain patient and prioritize safety above all else. More updates will be provided as conditions evolve.
