Heavy Rainfall Records Set Across Moroccan Cities

Rainfall amounts indicate significant weather patterns affecting local environments and communities.

Heavy rainfall has swept across several Moroccan cities, marking significant precipitation records over the past 24 hours. According to the General Directorate of Meteorology, the rainfall measurements were taken from 6:00 AM on Saturday, March 8, 2025, to 6:00 AM on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

Leading the record-breaking rainfall was the city of Tangier, which received 58.0 mm of rain, establishing itself as the most drenched of the cities during this period. Following closely behind was Chefchaouen, which saw 57.0 mm of rainfall.

Other cities also reported substantial rainfall, with Erban measuring 42.0 mm and Quneitra experiencing 31.0 mm of precipitation. The capital city, Rabat, alongside Larache and Nouveau, recorded 28.0 mm. Salu and Essaouira were not far behind, marking 25.0 mm and Beni Mellal recorded 24.0 mm of rain.

The weather continued to show notable activity with Le Sourcil reporting 22.0 mm and Tetouan alongside Muhammadiyah seeing 19.0 mm. Taza, Tit Melil, and Casablanca documented 18.0 mm of rain, and Al-Nawasir recorded 17.0 mm.

Additional measurements included Bin Sulaiman at 16.0 mm, Agadir-Inskan at 14.0 mm, and Settat, Meknnes, Khouribga, Sidi Suleiman, and Fez-Sis all receiving 13.0 mm. Oujda and Agadir-March reported 11.0 mm, and SAFI noted 10.0 mm. A lighter rainfall patter was observed with Taroudant at 7.0 mm and Tiznit at 6.0 mm.

Even with lesser amounts, cities such as Nador, Sir Ephni, Taouert, and Marrakech still recorded rainfall, albeit minimal, with 5.0 mm and less. Dakhla, Midelt, Al Hoceima, Tantan, Guelmim, and Bin Jarir each saw only 0.4 mm falling.

The regional meteorological shifts have led to the unprecedented rainfall, showcasing both the variability and intensity of seasonal weather patterns. The rainfall not only contributes water to the dry Moroccan environment but could also pose risks such as flooding, particularly in vulnerable urban areas.
