Heavy Rainfall Alert Issued Across Tamil Nadu Districts

Authorities warn of thunderstorms and heavy rain affecting key agricultural regions today

Chennai: A significant alert for heavy rainfall has been issued today, February 28, 2025, across Tamil Nadu's coastal and interior regions. The Chennai Weather Department reported conditions resulting from changes in easterly wind patterns, which are expected to lead to thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rain.

This meteorological warning alerts residents of ten districts: Kanyakumari, Thirunelveli, Tenkasi, Tuticorin, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Sivagangai, Thanjavur, and Madurai—all anticipating occasional heavy rainfall.

According to the weather department, "Heavy rain is likely to occur today, with possibilities of thunderstorms." The department has emphasized the necessity for preparedness as the weather conditions could vary widely across the districts, impacting local agriculture and daily activities.

The potential for rain has raised concerns among farmers, particularly as the delta districts are deeply engaged in rice harvesting activities. The forecast of heavy rain could hinder these activities, leading to calls for precautionary measures to safeguard cultivated produce. Farmers have expressed distress over the possibility of water stagnation at procurement centers, which would impact their yields.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has taken proactive measures by conducting video calls with district collectors from Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, and Pudukkottai to deliberate on the best ways to secure the rice stock against the impending rainfall. During these consultations, he stressed the need for efficient management and safety protocols to protect farmers' products from damage.

Also, the revenue administration has directed all district leaders via letter to implement appropriate safety arrangements for harvested rice within all procurement centers, ensuring farmers' livelihoods are well protected during this challenging weather pattern. They have been advised to coordinate with various departments to execute the necessary precautions as the weather situation develops.

Weather forecasts suggest there might be rain again tomorrow (March 1), with Kanyakumari, Thirunelveli, Tenkasi, Tuticorin, Virudhunagar, and Ramanathapuram anticipating continued rainfall across various regions.

Those living or working outdoors today should stay vigilant and closely monitor updates from local authorities for the latest information on weather conditions. Various alert levels have been established to keep the public informed and safe from potential hazards due to the anticipated heavy rainfall.

With rainfall forecasted potentially affecting transportation and daily operations, it is recommended for all individuals to plan accordingly, keeping safety and preparedness at the forefront of their minds.
