Heavy Rain Warning Issued For Kanagawa Prefecture

Residents are advised to prepare for potential flooding and landslides as heavy rain is expected this weekend.

The Yokohama Meteorological Observatory has issued a warning for heavy rain in Kanagawa Prefecture, anticipating significant rainfall on May 10, 2025. This alert comes as the region braces for a potential deluge that could lead to serious weather-related hazards.

Starting on the evening of May 9, the Kanto region, including Kanagawa, will experience cloudy skies with rain expected to fall over a wide area. The forecast indicates that the rain will intensify by noon on May 10, particularly in Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures, where warnings for heavy rain have been issued.

According to the observatory, the atmospheric conditions in Kanagawa will become unstable due to warm, moist air flowing towards a weather front that is expected to move eastward and stagnate south of Japan by nightfall. This instability raises concerns for localized heavy rainfall, especially in the eastern and western parts of Kanagawa.

"On May 10, we expect intense rain of 30 mm per hour in Kanagawa," the observatory stated. They have urged residents to be vigilant about the risks of sediment disasters, flooding in low-lying areas, and rising river levels from morning through evening.

The expected rainfall from 6:00 AM on May 9 to 6:00 AM on May 10 is projected to reach 50 mm in southern Kanto and 80 mm in the Izu Islands. Following this, from 6:00 AM on May 10 to 6:00 AM on May 11, the forecast indicates an additional 60 mm of rain in both the eastern and western parts of Kanagawa.

Specifically, in the northwest, northeast, and southern regions of Chiba Prefecture, rainfall could accumulate to as much as 100 mm within a 24-hour period from 6:00 PM on May 9 to 6:00 PM on May 10. Residents are advised to take precautions against potential landslides and flooding.

As the rain begins on May 9, the Kanto region will experience a drop in temperature, with highs expected to be similar to or lower than those recorded on May 8. The forecast predicts temperatures of 22°C in central Tokyo, Chiba, Saitama, and Utsunomiya, 23°C in Yokohama, and 21°C in Maebashi and Mito. Without much sunshine, the air may feel a bit cooler, prompting residents to consider wearing light jackets.

The meteorological conditions are expected to remain unstable throughout the day on May 10, with the possibility of heavy rain increasing if rain clouds develop more than anticipated. This could lead to severe weather warnings being issued if conditions worsen.

In preparation for the expected rain, the observatory recommends that residents carry rain gear, especially considering the strong southerly winds that will accompany the rainfall. These winds may make it challenging to use umbrellas effectively, so alternative waterproof options are advised.

In summary, the Kanto region is facing a wet and potentially hazardous weather scenario as heavy rain is forecasted to begin in the evening of May 9 and continue into May 10. With the possibility of localized flooding and landslides, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
