Heatwave Alert As Temperatures Soar Across Northern India

Residents brace for rising temperatures and potential thunderstorms in multiple states this week

As the scorching heat intensifies across northern India, residents of Delhi-NCR are bracing for a significant rise in temperatures. On April 2, 2025, temperatures are expected to increase by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius, potentially reaching 40 degrees Celsius within the next four to five days. According to the weather department, the sky will remain clear today, with a forecasted maximum temperature of 37 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 16 degrees Celsius.

Looking ahead, from April 3 to April 5, partial cloud cover is anticipated along with strong winds blowing at speeds ranging from 10 to 30 kilometers per hour. During this period, the maximum temperature could range between 37 to 39 degrees Celsius, while the minimum could be between 17 to 21 degrees Celsius. However, the heat intensity is expected to peak around April 6, when winds may weaken, leading to a further rise in temperatures. On April 6 and 7, the maximum temperature could soar to between 38 and 41 degrees Celsius, with minimums between 19 and 22 degrees Celsius.

Rain seems unlikely for the next ten days, as Skymet reports that April typically witnesses the highest temperatures, predicting a dry spell ahead. As winds slow down, a gradual increase in temperature is expected. Until April 5, the winds may provide slight relief, but the overall trend points towards a persistent rise in heat.

In Uttarakhand, the heat is already being felt, with temperatures climbing from the hills to the plains. This April is likely to be particularly hot, as many areas are experiencing discomfort due to the sun's intensity. While mornings and evenings offer some respite, the midday sun is proving to be relentless.

Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh, the heat is also gradually increasing. Clear weather on April 2 could lead to heightened temperatures, although a change is forecasted within the next 24 hours. Light rain is possible across both regions of the state on April 3, but the heat is expected to return shortly after.

In Lucknow, the current temperatures are 16.7 degrees Celsius minimum and 36.7 degrees Celsius maximum, contributing to the feeling of heat. Skymet has noted that in recent days, parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Gujarat have recorded maximum temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Odisha, in particular, has seen temperatures reach 42 degrees Celsius, which is 4 to 5 degrees above normal. A heatwave alert has been issued, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicating that temperatures may break records in the coming days.

Shifting focus to Chhattisgarh, the state is also experiencing intense heat, yet a change in weather is on the horizon. Meteorologist HP Chandra has indicated that on April 2 and 3, there is a possibility of rain and hailstorms in certain areas. The arrival of moist winds from the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and hailstorms to Chhattisgarh and surrounding areas.

According to forecasts, a decrease in temperatures is expected by April 4, 2025. Citizens have been advised to remain cautious, especially in regions like Kanker, Dhamtari, and Gariaband, where thunderstorms and lightning are likely. The weather department has warned that while there might not be any significant temperature change in the next 24 hours, a drop of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures could occur over the following three days.

In Raipur, the weather is expected to be mainly clear today, with maximum temperatures around 39 degrees Celsius and minimums around 24 degrees Celsius. However, light rain and thunderstorms could occur in the coming days. The weather department has urged residents to take precautions and be mindful of the changing weather conditions, particularly farmers who should protect their crops and avoid open areas during thunderstorms.

In Madhya Pradesh, a shift in weather has been observed over the past 24 hours. The arrival of moist winds has led to cloud formation in the southern region, with some areas experiencing drizzle. The weather department has issued a rain alert for over 24 districts today, including Bhopal, Indore, and Jabalpur. Due to ongoing changes in the weather, both day and night temperatures have dropped.

Rain has been recorded in Baitul, Harda, Shahpur, and Sehore in the last 24 hours. The low night temperature in the state was recorded in Sidhi at 12.6 degrees Celsius, while Pachmarhi recorded 20.6 degrees Celsius. The weather department has warned of rain due to the cyclonic circulation and western disturbance affecting the region.

On the horizon, a new western disturbance is expected to activate on Thursday, potentially bringing rain to areas in the Gwalior and Chambal divisions. Residents are advised to stay alert as the weather continues to evolve.

As temperatures rise across the country, the IMD has issued warnings for several states, indicating that heatwaves are likely to persist in regions like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. The IMD has noted that the temperatures in these areas could exceed normal levels, heightening the risk of heat-related health issues.

In summary, as northern India braces for rising temperatures and potential weather shifts, residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions to mitigate the impacts of the heat and changing weather patterns.
