Hazardous Driving Conditions Due To Fog Reported On Romanian Highways

Drivers advised to exercise caution as visibility drops below 200 meters on major routes.

Driving conditions on Romanian roads have taken a dangerous turn as fog and the risk of ice formation have severely impacted visibility and safety. According to the Romanian Traffic Information Center, motorists are advised to exercise caution on major highways including the A1 Bucharest-Pitești, A2 Bucharest-Constanța, and A3 Bucharest-Brașov.

On February 24, 2025, reports indicated substantial visibility issues, particularly below 200 meters due to dense fog. The challenge is exacerbated along the section of the A2, spanning from Bucharest to Cernavodă—in which temperatures have dipped below -10 degrees Celsius, increasing the likelihood of ice on the roads.

"Visibility is recorded below 200 meters, with some areas experiencing less than 100 meters of visibility,” the Romanian Traffic Information Center reported. The potential for black ice raises significant concerns, and as such, drivers are urged to reduce their speed considerably.

Weather conditions have led to the recommendation for drivers to increase the following distance between vehicles, ensuring safer travel as roads may be wet or covered with snow. "Reducing speed is key," the traffic authorities have cautioned.

Traffic has also intensified on the approaches to the capital city, reflecting the increased caution exercised by local drivers. While there have been no major incidents reported on national roads from accidents or adverse weather events, the risk remains high during such periods.

Travelers on the roads are reminded to employ their vehicle’s lights and take precautionary measures if conditions worsen. The Romanian Traffic Information Center continues to monitor the situation closely and has committed to keeping motorists informed.

Drivers seeking to navigate through these challenging conditions are advised to stay updated on traffic reports and weather alerts as they travel, particularly if their routes include the compromised regions. The safety of motorists remains the top priority, and adhering to the recommended practices can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.

Given the unpredictable nature of weather and road conditions, vigilance is not only encouraged but necessary. Authorities stress the importance of being prepared for sudden changes as more fog and inclement weather could return as the winter season continues.

Stay safe, informed, and cautious when traveling along Romania’s highways and be sure to keep up with traffic advisories for continued updates.
