Hawaii Fire Department Welcomes Four New Ambulances

The new ambulances will replace aging vehicles and improve emergency services across the island.

HILO, Hawaii - The Hawaii Fire Department celebrated the arrival of four new ambulances on March 17, 2025, as part of its commitment to upgrading emergency services on the island. The event took place at the county building in Hilo, where county leaders conducted a ceremonial blessing for the new vehicles.

Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "When it come to emergency services, our island deserves nothing less than the best. We are excited to welcome these new ambulances to our fleet and are grateful for the State Legislature for securing the necessary funds." Highlighting the need for reliable emergency resources, the mayor's remarks echoed the sentiments shared by many within the community who depend on these services.

The new ambulances, which totaled about $1.2 million financed by the state, are set to be allocated across several fire stations, including Central (Hilo), Keauhou, Waikoloa, and Ocean View. Fire Chief Kazuo Todd elaborated on the importance of these vehicles, saying, "These new ambulances represent our unwavering commitment to providing high-quality emergency medical care to the people of Hawaii County. We are grateful for the continued support of the state and our community in strengthening our emergency response capabilities.”

The arrival of the ambulances is part of broader initiatives aimed at updating Hawaii's emergency service infrastructure, underscoring the significance of state funding and community involvement for enhancing public safety. This outreach stems from pressing needs, especially after facing various challenges posed by aging equipment.

On the same day, the 58th annual St. Patrick's Day parade brightened Waikiki, featuring around 800 participants, including marching bands and local community leaders. It was another reminder of the vibrant culture and community spirit present across Hawaii, highlighting the enthusiasm locals feel for traditional celebrations.

“The parade showcases not just our cultural heritage but also our community’s unity,” one organizer remarked. Events like these harmonize with the spirit of cooperation and resilience, especially witnessed amid festivities.

Visitors and residents alike gathered to celebrate, enjoying the community atmosphere enhanced by colorful floats and live music performances. The backdrop of the parade meant high spirits, epitomizing the joys of coming together as local festivities mark the changing seasons.

Despite the jubilant parade experiences, the day took a perilous turn at the airport, where safety protocols triggered the suspension of ground crews and flight operations around 3 p.m. due to lightning strikes. Such weather-related interruptions serve as stark reminders of Hawaii's unpredictable weather conditions, necessitating quick responses and precautions from both authorities and traveling public.

With the recent natural occurrences and festive gatherings highlighting community interactions, the collective spirit of Hawaii is marked by resilience and acknowledgment of both the challenges faced and the celebrations enjoyed. The successful acquisition of new ambulances alongside community events paints a comprehensive picture of life across the islands.

Looking forward, there remains anticipation for the community fundraiser slated for March 30, 2025, at Ala Moana Center, where Hawaii native and Heisman winner will join forces with Ronald McDonald House Charities Hawaii. This event aims to strengthen the island’s commitment to supporting families and children facing health challenges.

Encouraging public involvement, the gathering emphasizes not just philanthropic efforts but also the island’s shared responsibility toward its most vulnerable residents, showcasing Hawaii's dedication to community welfare.
