Harry Brook Withdraws From IPL 2025, Faces Ban Risk

The English all-rounder’s second consecutive withdrawal leaves Delhi Capitals scrambling for solutions.

Harry Brook, the English all-rounder, has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, marking his second consecutive pullout from the tournament. This decision has significant repercussions for the Delhi Capitals (DC), who secured Brook at the IPL mega auction for INR 6.25 crores (approximately £590,000) last November.

The announcement came shortly before the much-anticipated start of the tournament on March 22, 2025. Brook's decision was communicated by officials of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on March 2, 2025, who then relayed the news to the management of Delhi Capitals.

Brook’s absence is not merely unfortunate for the franchise; it places him at risk of facing a two-year ban under new IPL regulations, which have been implemented to discourage players from withdrawing after being auctioned. According to the rules outlined prior to the auction, "any [overseas] player who registers for [an] auction and, after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season will get banned from participating in the IPL/IPL auction for two seasons," as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

This new policy, introduced following numerous incidents of last-minute withdrawals by overseas players, aims to bolster commitment among players and maintain the integrity of the league. The only exception to the ban will be injuries, which must be confirmed by the player's home board.

Brook's withdrawal follows another emotional decision last year when he pulled out of IPL 2024 just ten days prior to the start of the season after the death of his grandmother. His repeated absence from the IPL raises questions about his future participation and commitment to the franchise and the league.

Taking to Twitter on March 9, 2025, Brook addressed his supporters and the franchise. He stated, "I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologize unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters. I love cricket. Ever since I was a young boy I have dreamt of playing for my country and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at this level. With the guidance of people I trust, I have taken the time to seriously considered this decision. It is a really important time for England cricket and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series. To do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date. I know not everyone will understand, and I don't expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right, and playing for my country remains my priority and focus. I remain hugely grateful for the opportunities I have been afforded and the support I receive."

This decision undoubtedly leaves Delhi Capitals at a crossroads. Not only are they faced with finding Brook’s replacement before the IPL season kicks off, but they are also dealing with uncertainty as they have yet to announce their captain, often seen as one of the most pivotal decisions for any franchise. Current players KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis remain frontrunners for the captaincy.

Harry Brook’s IPL career has been tumultuous so far; during his only season, he struggled with consistency, scoring just 190 runs at an average of 22.11 over 11 matches for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. His best performance came from a standout innings where he scored 100 not out against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

With the 2025 IPL season looming just around the corner, the Delhi Capitals are grappling with the disappointment of losing one of their major signings yet again, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of sport, and the need to adapt rapidly to adversities. The franchise will need to rally, now more than ever, as they aim for success without one of their star players as the tournament season commences.

Brook’s situation serves as a cautionary tale, reflecting the broader challenges faced by players trying to balance personal commitments with the demanding schedule of professional cricket. His focus now shifts toward international commitments, with the ECB likely to integrate his playing strategies and fitness management as they prepare for forthcoming matches.
