Harrogate Town Defeats Barrow To Boost Survival Hopes

Jack Muldoon stars with goal and assist as Sulphurites secure important away victory.

Harrogate Town secured a much-needed 2-0 victory against Barrow AFC on January 4, 2025, bolstering their hopes of survival in League Two. The win came after the Sulphurites had suffered from poor form, having lost six of their last seven matches, with only one point to show from their previous 21 available. With the victory, Harrogate moved five points clear of the relegation zone.

Jack Muldoon was instrumental for Harrogate, scoring his first league goal of the season and providing the assist for the second goal, scored by Josh March. The match took place at SO Legal Stadium, where Harrogate's resilience and drive were evident from the start.

After dominating possession and chances in the first half, it was Muldoon who opened the scoring for Harrogate, glancing home from close range in the 56th minute. Just five minutes later, he showcased his playmaking ability with a superb pass to March, who drilled home from 20 yards to double the lead.

Barrow had opportunities to respond, most significantly being awarded a penalty kick after Warren Burrell fouled Kian Spence. Connor Mahoney, aiming for his first goal for the Cumbrians, failed to convert, sending the penalty high over the crossbar, which proved detrimental for his team's morale.

Despite some late pressure from the home team, Harrogate's defense, led by goalkeeper James Belshaw, held firm. Charlie Kirk had his shot blocked, and another attempt from Ged Garner was saved, ensuring Harrogate kept their clean sheet. The attendance for the match was 3,148 on what turned out to be a significant day for the visiting team.

Simon Weaver, the manager of Harrogate Town, expressed his delight after the match, stating, "It is only one win but it goes some way to bridging the gap between ourselves and several teams ahead of us." He emphasized the importance of the victory, adding, "We got here through spit and sawdust in non-league by battling. While we may never have been perfect, the battling qualities have been perfect. Some people have lost sight ofthat at times."

Looking forward, Weaver noted the upcoming challenge against Leeds United but remained clear about the importance of continuing their fight to stay up in League Two, something they had achieved successfully for four seasons now. "The priority is staying up for a club like us. We have done it four times on the bounce and we want to do it again," he said.

On the other side, Barrow AFC's manager, Stephen Clemence, did not hold back on his team's unacceptable performance. He admitted, "It wasn't acceptable and we all have to take responsibility, especially myself. Some of our levels were below what we set lately, and the Barrow supporters deserve more thanthat and I can only apologise we didn't get any points."

Clemence acknowledged the urgency for his team, who have now only won once out of their last 14 league matches, stating, "They must give themselves a reality check and can forget trying to challenge for the play-offs. They need to try and win a football game."

Harrogate Town's victory over Barrow marks not only their first win since November 29, but also restores faith after several disheartening weeks. With this much-needed morale boost, the Sulphurites now look forward with renewed purpose and the knowledge they can still secure their spot for next season.
