Hannah Kobayashi Found Safe After Voluntarily Disappearing Into Mexico
After nearly four weeks of uncertainty and concern, Hannah Kobayashi has been located safe and sound, as confirmed by her family. The 30-year-old photographer from Hawaii went missing after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on November 8, 2024. Following her arrival, she failed to board her connecting flight to New York and was reported missing by her family days later.

Just as troubling was the tragic news of her father, Ryan Kobayashi, who took his own life during the search for Hannah on November 24. “We are incredibly relieved and grateful to announce Hannah has been found safe,” stated her sister, Sydni Kobayashi, and mother, Brandi Yee, through their attorney, Sara Azari. The family expressed deep appreciation for the outpouring of support they received during this harrowing month. They also requested privacy as they navigate through the healing process.
Hannah's disappearance was marked by troubling clues and concerning communications. She had sent her family texts stating she did not feel safe and believed someone was attempting to steal her identity. After her last communication on November 11, all contact ceased and her phone was found abandoned at LAX. This led to fears she may have been abducted or harmed.
Authorities from the Los Angeles Police Department reclassed her missing person case as voluntary after significant investigation. Surveillance footage showed Kobayashi leaving the airport and heading down to Union Station by metro. A day later, she was seen purchasing tickets and crossing the border to Mexico at the San Ysidro port of entry.
Despite the fears expressed by her family, the LAPD reported they had not uncovered any evidence of foul play or trafficking. LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell emphasized Kobayashi’s right to privacy, noting her decision to disconnect and travel alone. He offered, “A simple message could really help to ease the concern loved ones feel for her.”
Upon locating her, the family refrained from giving details on her whereabouts or circumstances of her voluntary disappearance. The focus now, they indicated, is on healing from the trauma of the past few weeks.
