Hakodate City Unveils New Year's Festivals And Events

Traditional Misogi Festival and dining promotions highlight Hakodate’s cultural heritage as the New Year begins.

Hakodate City is set to welcome the New Year with unique and cherished traditions, showcasing both historical observance and community engagement through its upcoming events. Chief among these is the 195th Misogi Festival, scheduled for January 13 to January 15, 2025, taking place primarily at Sameshigawa Shrine, Misogi Park, and Misogi Beach.

The Misogi Festival, steeped in tradition since 1831, involves purification rituals conducted by local youths known as Gyōshusha. Starting from January 13, these selected individuals will undergo intensive training, culminating on January 15 when they perform purification rites by immersing themselves repeatedly in the icy waters of the Tsugaru Strait. The event is not only about personal endurance but also embodies prayers for bountiful fishing and agricultural success for the upcoming year.

On January 14, attendees can witness the highlight of the festival as spectators flock to see the Gyōshusha brave the frigid waters during the evening ritual, known as "Mizugori." This vibrant event attracts many onlookers, and interestingly, the water splashed on spectators is believed to bring them good fortune, creating a shared moment of community blessing.

Alongside the Misogi Festival, Hakodate City will also host the Cold Weather Misogi Festival, which promises various activities and attractions aimed at engaging both locals and visitors. The combination of these events aims to instill excitement and camaraderie, as the city pulses with activity during this celebratory time.

Adding to the festivities, Hotel Tetra, along with its affiliated restaurants and inns, is offering a special promotion where patrons can share their New Year’s resolutions or future dreams and receive complimentary meals. This initiative not only augments the traditional celebrations but fosters connection among community members and supports local businesses during the festive season.

Albert, the manager at Hotel Tetra, expressed enthusiasm for the events: "Seeing the Gyōshusha enduring the freezing cold water is something you don’t want to miss." Remarking on the unique cultural experience, he hints at the festival’s draw for both tourists and locals alike, as it showcases the resilient spirit and warmth of Hakodate.

These events serve as vibrant displays of local culture, blending ancient practices with modern community activities to create meaningful experiences. Amid the winter chill, Hakodate's New Year celebrations aim to warm hearts and spirits, leaving participants hopeful for what the year may bring.
