Gypsy Rose Blanchard Shares Her Mother's Final Words Before Murder

Blanchard recalls deep emotional ties as she reflects on the tragic night and her new life post-release.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard, now 33, has bravely opened up about the harrowing night she helped to murder her mother, Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard, and shared her final words to her mom before the tragic event. Appearing on 60 Minutes, Blanchard recounted the details of her involvement, stating she was just 23 years old when she instructed her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to stab Dee Dee to death. This shocking crime stemmed from years of abuse Blanchard endured at the hands of her mother, who deceitfully claimed to have afflicted her with numerous ailments, including leukemia and muscular dystrophy.

Reflecting on the night of the murder, which took place in July 2015 at their home in Springfield, Missouri, Blanchard shared, "I can honestly say I would have never committed... pushed to the brink, where I really just snapped." Her life had been filled with manipulation, including her mother's cruel practices, such as shaving her head, forcing her to use a wheelchair, and parading her around for sympathy and donations.

During the interview, Blanchard recounted the emotional complexity of her feelings for her mother, noting her last words were "I love you." She explained how, moments before the incident, she embraced her mother, acknowledging the deep-seated bond they shared. "I did go to the kitchen and I gave her a hug, and I told her, 'I love you,'" she recalled, illustrating the tragic irony of the situation. Despite her desire to escape the toxic relationship, there remained moments of affection and love rooted deep within her heart.

Blanchard had always felt trapped and disoriented; when Godejohn entered the home to carry out the stabbing, she was hiding inside the bathroom. "I wanted to help her, but I was almost paralyzed..." she stated, admitting to the overwhelming emotional hold her mother had on her. This insight reveals the devastating power of abuse, making it clear why Blanchard felt she had no other choice.

Following the events, both Gypsy and Godejohn were arrested and faced justice for their roles. Godejohn was sentenced to life imprisonment, whereas Gypsy was charged with second-degree murder and received a ten-year sentence. She managed to secure early release on December 28, 2023, after serving eight years.

Since her release, Gypsy has begun to rebuild her life. She has found love with Ken Urker, who was initially her pen pal during her time behind bars. Together, they welcomed their daughter, Aurora, and Blanchard is determined to break the cycles of abuse by being transparent with her child about her past. "I will always be honest with her," Gypsy declared, emphasizing, "My will to be a Better mother than what my mother was is so strong."

Reflecting on her time imprisoned, Blanchard's mindset during those years was marked by deep emotional struggle, and even Godejohn, through various prison interviews, expressed regret over the murder: "If I had to change anything at all... I would've ran away with Gypsy." He previously mentioned his desire to escape from the toxic situation they found themselves entangled within.

Gypsy's story stands as a powerful illustration of the tragic consequences of abusive relationships and the unyielding glue of emotional bonds, even when it may lead to unimaginable outcomes. She is now focusing on constructing her future as both a mother and survivor, making it clear she hopes to instill resilience and honesty within her daughter as they navigate life together, away from her mother's shadow.
