Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t keeping her lips sealed about being Timothée Chalamet’s onscreen love interest. In her April cover story for Vanity Fair, published on Tuesday, March 19, 2025, Paltrow opened up about starring opposite Chalamet in the upcoming film Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie, which serves as his follow-up to 2019’s Uncut Gems.
The film is centered around Marty Mauser, a professional Ping Pong player portrayed by Chalamet, set in the 1950s. Last fall, photos of Chalamet and Paltrow kissing on the set of the film in Central Park leaked, igniting a flurry of online discussions among fans. Paltrow references their on-screen chemistry, explaining, “This woman who is married to someone who is in the Ping Pong mafia, as it were, sparks up a romance with Chalamet.” She further describes her character's predicament, stating that “she’s had a pretty tough life,” and her connection with Chalamet’s character is “transactional” for both of them.
Moreover, Paltrow teased the depth of their relationship, exclaiming, “We have a lot of sex in this movie. There’s a lot—a lot.” Paltrow, who had not seen any of Chalamet's previous films before working with him, praised his professionalism and charisma. “He’s such a thinking man’s sex symbol,” she noted, adding that he is “very polite” and “properly raised.” With regard to Chalamet’s work ethic, she remarked, “He’s a man who takes his work really seriously and is a fun partner.”
Paltrow's mention of intimacy scenes sparked curiosity, particularly her experience with intimacy coordinators—a relatively new role in the film industry focusing on choreographing romantic scenes. She humorously recounted her initial reaction: “There’s now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I did not know existed.” On set, when the coordinator asked her to perform a specific move, Paltrow humorously replied, “I was like, ‘Girl, I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera’s on.’” Reflecting on her style of acting, she suggested that the pushy nature of intimacy coaching can feel stifling, concluding, “We said, ‘I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back.’”
Highlighting the notable age disparity between them during their intimate moments, she jokingly remarked, “I was like, ‘OK, great. I’m 109 years old. You’re 14.’” This blend of humor and serious conversation has led many to anticipate the movie’s release.
Paltrow was encouraged to join this project by her brother and filmmaker Jake Paltrow, a fan of Safdie’s work. The film represents a significant return for Paltrow, who has focused on her parenting and her wellness brand, Goop, for the past several years. Her most recent significant acting role prior to this was in the 2010 film Country Strong; since then, she has appeared in a few Marvel films and made guest appearances, such as her role in the series The Politician.
The cast of Marty Supreme also includes notable names like Tyler, the Creator, Kevin O’Leary, and Odessa A’zion, adding to the film’s appeal. Co-written by Safdie, Ronald Bronstein, and produced by A24 among others, the film is expected to hit theaters on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025, creating a buzz among moviegoers eager to see revelations from this intriguing story unfold.
