Gwangju FC Moves Home Stadium To Enhance Fan Experience

The club's shift to Gwangju World Cup Stadium aims to offer better facilities and a more engaging atmosphere for supporters.

Gwangju FC, a professional football club in South Korea, has officially announced a significant shift in its home venue for the 2025 season. As of March 19, 2025, the club will move its home matches to Gwangju World Cup Stadium, transitioning from the Gwangju Football Stadium where it has played since July 2020.

This decision follows the completion of administrative procedures necessary for the stadium change, primarily driven by new regulations from the Korea Professional Football League regarding stadium facilities. The Gwangju Football Stadium, which is 97 meters long and has a seating capacity of just 7,800, no longer meets the league's updated standards for hosting K League 1 games, a status that will take effect in 2027. Limitations such as the basic amenities in the existing stadium, including inadequate stores and restrooms, resulted in persistent fan complaints about the matchday experience.

In light of these issues, Gwangju FC initiated discussions with the Gwangju Metropolitan City and the Gwangju Sports Council to facilitate the move to Gwangju World Cup Stadium. This venue boasts superior facilities, a roofing structure that shields spectators from rain, and additional seating capacity to enhance the atmosphere for fans. As part of preparations for the 2025 season, Gwangju FC has already hosted matches against Suwon FC and FC Anyang at the new stadium.

In parallel, the Gwangju Football Stadium will undergo remodeling to serve various functional purposes post-transition. Plans are underway to establish a living center for U-15 players and expand the training facilities for the professional squad, thus ensuring a fertile environment for player development. Additionally, the existing stadium is set to feature a history exhibition hall dedicated to the club and will be involved in community outreach projects, reaffirming Gwangju FC's role as a civic-oriented organization.

With this stadium relocation confirmed, a club spokesperson expressed a commitment to enhancing the matchday experience for fans, stating, "With the home stadium confirmed as Gwangju World Cup Stadium, we will do our utmost to create a comfortable environment for our supporters. At the same time, the Gwangju Football Stadium will be repurposed for community benefit, reaffirming our commitment to being a citizen's club.”

The preparation for the 2025 season not only includes logistical changes but also reflects Gwangju FC's ambitions moving forward. After successfully reaching the quarterfinals of the prestigious AFC Champions League Elite (ACLE) in the previous season, the club is prioritizing both competitive excellence and community connection. Support—and significant financial backing—from the city government for the club's infrastructure and participation in international competitions underscores the municipality's intention to foster local sporting talent and pride.

In summary, Gwangju FC's venue transition signifies a new chapter in its pursuit of success and greater integration within the local community, promising fans a more enjoyable experience as they rally behind their team in the upcoming season.
