Gwangju And Jeonnam Brace For Stormy Weather Today

Heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms expected throughout the day

On May 3, 2025, residents of Gwangju and Jeonnam are bracing for a day of tumultuous weather, as forecasts predict rain accompanied by strong winds, thunder, and lightning. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, rainfall amounts are expected to range from 10 to 40 millimeters, with the heaviest downpours likely occurring between 3 AM and 6 AM, and again from 3 PM to 6 PM.

The early hours of the morning may see light drizzle, with some areas potentially recording measurable precipitation. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, as visibility will be reduced and roads may become slippery due to the rain. The authorities recommend maintaining safe distances and reducing speeds while driving to ensure safety.

As the day progresses, the rain will be accompanied by strong winds, particularly in coastal areas. A strong wind warning has been issued for regions such as Haenam, Wando, Jindo, Heuksando, and Hongdo, where gusts are expected to exceed 20 meters per second (approximately 70 kilometers per hour). The West Sea is also expected to experience strong winds, with wave heights reaching between 1.5 and 3.5 meters, prompting warnings for maritime activities.

In terms of temperatures, the morning lows are expected to range from 8 to 13 degrees Celsius, with Gwangju forecasted to start the day at around 11 degrees. The afternoon highs will be slightly cooler than usual, reaching between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius, with Gwangju peaking at 18 degrees. This temperature drop is a result of a northwesterly wind that may make it feel even cooler outside.

Residents are reminded to pay attention to weather updates throughout the day, especially regarding the potential for thunderstorms, which could pose risks for outdoor activities and infrastructure. The Korea Meteorological Administration has advised that facility management should be prioritized to prevent accidents from falling debris during thunderstorm conditions.

Moreover, the rapid changes in atmospheric pressure in the West Sea could lead to tidal waves, raising concerns for coastal safety. Authorities have warned that waves may wash over coastal roads or breakwaters, and residents should remain vigilant near the shore.

Looking ahead to May 4, the forecast indicates a return to clearer skies, though significant temperature fluctuations are expected, particularly between day and night. Morning lows are predicted to drop to between 5 and 12 degrees Celsius, with afternoon highs climbing to between 19 and 23 degrees Celsius. With a temperature difference of around 15 degrees Celsius between day and night, health management will be crucial for residents in Gwangju and the surrounding inland areas.

As the weather unfolds, community members are encouraged to stay informed and prepared for the changing conditions, ensuring safety for themselves and others during this unpredictable weather event.
