Guelph, Ontario is gearing up for what promises to be an engaging holiday season as Christmas and Boxing Day approach in 2024. With these celebratory days falling on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, the city is preparing to adjust its services and open its doors to residents and visitors eager to partake in the festivities.
City services will make some important changes during this time. Notably, there will be no curbside waste pickup on Christmas Day, December 25. Instead, collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week, so those with trash pickups scheduled between Wednesday and Friday will need to adjust their plans. Guelph Transit also has altered its service schedule to accommodate the holidays. According to Guelph.ca, transit service will end early on Christmas Eve, December 24, at 7 p.m., and buses will run on-demand from 9:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. on Christmas Day. The only exception is route 99, which will continue to run every 30 minutes. Boxing Day service will adhere to the Sunday schedule, allowing for easier travel during shopping hours.
Residents should take note: All city administration offices, including City Hall, will be closed on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Likewise, all recreation centres and public library locations will also take a break during these two days, returning to their regular operating schedule by Friday, December 27.
For those eager to get their holiday shopping done, many local businesses will be making adjustments to their hours. The Stone Road Mall is slated to close on Christmas Day but will reopen on Boxing Day, December 26, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., offering patrons the chance to snag post-Christmas deals. Other notable locations include the Beer Store, with one outlet at 111 Silvercreek Parkway North, which will open on Boxing Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Though many will enjoy shopping, the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) stores will remain closed on both holidays, encouraging residents to plan accordingly.
Food is another significant aspect of the holiday experience, and Guelph has much to offer. Kirtida Kitchen will be providing free meals to individuals and families who need them on Christmas Day at their new location on 245 Edinburgh Road South. They will be giving away meals between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., ensuring those who might be struggling have access to a warm meal on this special day. Meanwhile, restaurants like the Mandarin at 565 Woodlawn Road West will host buffet lunches and dinners from December 24 to 26, though prices will be adjusted for the holidays.
Several Tim Hortons locations and corner stores will remain operational for those last-minute treats or essentials. The Ethnic Supermarket at 234 Victoria Road South will also be closed on Christmas Day but will extend its hours to 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on December 26 to serve the community.
The sense of community and festive spirit alive during this holiday season is palpable this year. Residents are encouraged not only to support local businesses but also to participate in various events and activities, creating lasting memories with family and friends. Guelph's rich traditions and the warm spirit of giving make this holiday season one to enjoy and cherish.
With so much happening, Guelph's holiday festivities will undoubtedly draw locals who appreciate the magic of the season. The city's efforts to adjust services and promote local businesses reflect the supportive community spirit. There is no doubt Guelph will once again create lasting memories as families come together to celebrate Christmas, Boxing Day, and the joys of community spirit.
