The streets of Guadalajara will be alive with excitement on February 23, 2025, as the 2025 Guadalajara Electrolit Half Marathon, also known as the 21K Guadalajara, gathers thousands of enthusiastic participants. With 21,000 runners expected, the event is set to be one of the most significant athletic gatherings the city has seen, coinciding with the celebrations for Guadalajara's 483rd anniversary.
David Prado Arredondo, the General Director of COMUDE Guadalajara, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "We will have 21,000 people running through the city of Guadalajara..." This event aims to not only highlight the athletic talent of elite runners but also to showcase the beauty of Guadalajara, ensuring spectators can enjoy the scenic route.
This year’s marathon boasts participation from elite athletes, including Amos Kipruto, who has made headlines as the winner of the London Marathon 2022 and third place finisher at the Chicago Marathon 2024. Joining him is Antony Kimtai, who recently triumphed at the Milan 21K, alongside other top contenders from various countries. Among the female competitors is the renowned Helah Jelagat Kiprop, celebrated for her victories at high-profile marathons like the Tokyo and Paris marathons.
Local runner Juan Luis Barrios, who is also expected to be among the top competitors, reflected on the event's growth and impact on the running community. "The 21K of Guadalajara has become an emblematic event...," he said, noting the blending of amateur and elite athletes at the marathon.
To guarantee the safety of all participants and spectators, the Jalisco Traffic Police will implement extensive security measures. With 300 officers, 42 motorcycles, and 20 patrol cars, the police are set to handle any challenges during the race efficiently. Road closures will begin at 5:00 AM on race day, affecting several major streets, including Avenida Vallarta, Avenida Niño Obrero, and Avenida Lázaro Cárdenas, among others.
The closures will enable the marathon to run smoothly, as runners depart from the iconic Glorieta Minerva. The first wave of participants, including those with disabilities, will start at 6:20 AM, followed by elite runners at 6:30 AM and the general public shortly after. Participants will navigate through the vibrant streets of Guadalajara, taking routes admired for their cultural significance.
This year's marathon goes beyond just competition; it is also part of the city’s broader celebration, which includes the GDLUZ festival, making this event much more than just another athletic challenge. It brings together local and international runners, as the city showcases its capabilities to host grand events.
Participants and spectators are encouraged to plan accordingly, considering road closures and alternative routes to avoid delays. Prado Arredondo reassured the public of the organization’s commitment to safety and efficiency, encouraging community participation. "It is important to present the stars we will see on Sunday..." he added, highlighting the blend of local pride and international presence.
The Guadalajara Electrolit Half Marathon symbolizes not only athletic prowess but also community spirit, as hundreds of families gather to cheer on their loved ones and the professional athletes vying for top positions. With preparations well underway, anticipation grows for this exciting event, promising both challenges and triumphs for runners and their supporters alike.
Finally, as the countdown to the marathon initiates, the city stands ready to support those participating, reinforcing Guadalajara’s standing as both a vibrant community and a notable venue for international competitions.
