GTA 5 Enhanced Launch Met With Player Disappointment

Missing text chat feature and performance issues mar the highly anticipated PC update.

Rockstar Games has officially launched the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced edition for PC over the weekend, much to the excitement of gamers. Unfortunately, this new take on the beloved title has been met with mixed reviews, mainly due to notable omissions and technical challenges experienced by players.

Released on March 4, 2025, the enhanced version of Grand Theft Auto 5 (now labeled as GTA 5 Enhanced) introduced higher graphical fidelity, improved audio, and faster load times. Among the much-lauded enhancements were ray tracing support and upscaling options for both AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards. While players were eager to explore Los Santos with the new features, many were disappointed after discovering the absence of the much-loved text chat feature, which was available in the original GTA 5 on PC.

Many players took to Steam to voice their concerns, leading to over 1,600 negative reviews at launch. The game’s rating has rapidly dipped to "Mixed" on the platform, reflecting the backlash from those who feel the Enhanced version does not serve as the definitive iteration they hoped for. Issues reported included complications with migrating data from the previous GTA 5 Legacy version, which has now been delisted from digital storefronts.

Players who own the legacy version have the option to transfer their story mode and online progress. Yet, some found themselves confronting various error messages during this process. "I just want to carry over my progress, and I keep hitting wall after wall," shared one frustrated player on community forums. Rockstar has indicated this frustration may be exacerbated by existing flags on accounts, rendering some players unable to transfer their data, even if they have never used cheats.

Rockstar's servers have been described as "under siege," with overwhelming traffic from eager gamers attempting to log onto the updated version. This rush has compounded issues relating to gameplay migrations and access to the new features. Despite the upgrade options and the promise of improvements, players have experienced difficulties. Notably absent from the launch is text chat, which several players initially assumed was simply overlooked. Discussions on Reddit and other forums reflect widespread disappointment, as many had anticipated improved communication options.

One player stated, "The lack of text chat really limits one of the most engaging parts of this game – how we communicate and coordinate with each other during missions." To compensate, Rockstar has recommended utilizing Steam chat features or the game’s SMS function, rather than reinstated text chat.

Several enhancements were lauded during testing, including impressive ray-traced graphics and audio improvements with Dolby Atmos support, promising experiences those features are expected to significantly augment. During tests, graphics settings pushed to the maximum produced phenomenal results, with the best visuals being reported by players utilizing high-performance setups. Yet, these technical advancements seem overshadowed by players’ disquiet over the incomplete functionality.

Popular gaming websites and reviewers have praised the visual upgrade and the compelling nature of the gameplay, remarking on the detailed environments brought to life through improved refractions and shadows. A prominent reviewer reported achieving 123 frames per second on high-end rigs, saying, "No doubt the game has never looked so good." Yet, issues persist with the problematic Rockstar Games Launcher, as many players reported login complications, to the point where users expressed considerable frustration with having to deal with added hurdles just to access their purchased content.

On top of the migration woes, players are also calling out Rockstar for not including High-Dynamic-Range (HDR) support, noting how outdated this leaves the game's presentation, particularly at this phase of gaming development. This absence raises questions for dedicated PC gamers who expect more from titles launching well past the peak of high-end gaming graphics.

On March 4, the fanbase was buoyed not just by the Enhanced edition but also by the excitement surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI, which Rockstar has confirmed will be releasing this fall. This has led to speculation about how these developments would influence the future of the series. A separate narrative around GTA Online has emerged concurrently, with Rockstar debuting kernel-based anti-cheat measures and proactive voice moderation to combat toxicity during gameplay.

Analysts suggest the timing of GTA 5 Enhanced positions it as perhaps more of a stepping stone, paving the way for excitement around the imminent release of Grand Theft Auto 6. The anticipated sequel is rumored to launch on the heels of the Enhanced edition, placing Rockstar on the brink of another industry-shifting moment, should they manage to iron out current issues.

For those on the fence about GTA 5 Enhanced, Rockstar is currently offering the game at discounted pricing, making the transition more appealing to new entrants eager to explore Los Santos once more before the upcoming sequel.

While the Enhanced edition has improved numerous technical aspects, the road forward for both players and Rockstar may require substantial adjustment. Whether the developers can address user feedback effectively remains to be seen, but the gaming world will certainly be watching closely as they prepare for what's next on the horizon.
