Grêmio Edges Juventude 2-1 In Gauchão Semifinal First Leg

A strong home performance gives Grêmio the upper hand as they chase another Gauchão title.

Grêmio has taken the lead in the Gauchão semifinal with a 2-1 victory over Juventude at their home ground, the Arena do Grêmio, on February 22, 2025. The Tricolor's goals came from Martin Braithwaite and Cristian Olivera, setting the stage for the second leg of the tie at the Alfredo Jaconi Stadium on March 1, 2025.

The match started with the hosts showcasing their characteristic intensity, which has been a hallmark under coach Gustavo Quinteros. Grêmio dominated the early exchanges and opened the scoring just 13 minutes in. João Pedro made an impressive run down the left flank, delivering a precise cross which Braithwaite finished powerfully at the near post for his sixth goal of the season, drawing him closer to the tournament's top scorer, Emerson Galego from Ypiranga.

Despite the early setback, Juventude responded with determination. The visitors drew level at 1-1 when Batalla capitalized on defensive errors from Grêmio. He received a pass from Jean Carlos at the edge of the area and with the help of deflections, caught goalkeeper Tiago Volpi off guard, leveling the score at 33 minutes.

After the first half, the teams entered the locker room tied at one, but it was clear the intensity would continue. Grêmio came out firing again after the break. Just six minutes later, Amuzu assisted Cristian Olivera, who scored from close range to restore the lead for Grêmio at 2-1.

Following the goal, Grêmio chose to consolidate their advantage, often sitting back to absorb pressure from Juventude, who sought to equalize once more. Throughout the second half, Juventude struggled to create meaningful scoring opportunities, largely due to Grêmio’s organized defensive setup and quick counter-attacks.

Grêmio's Edenilson had the chance to extend the lead to 3-1, but his effort was called back after the referee reviewed the play for a foul earlier in the sequence, much to the frustration of the home crowd. The game saw several additional minutes of stoppage time due to the number of interruptions, with excitement peaking as Braithwaite struck the woodwork late, keeping the match tense until the final whistle.

The victory keeps Grêmio's hopes alive for their eighth consecutive Gauchão title, which would be unprecedented for the club. The teams will reconvene for the second leg where Grêmio will look to protect their slim advantage, knowing they can secure their place in the finals with just a draw. Should Juventude win by one goal, the match will be decided by penalties.
