Grizzlies Dominate Second Half To Crush Jazz 140-103

Memphis capitalizes on second-half surge in victory without Ja Morant while Utah struggles to regain form.

In a dominant display, the Memphis Grizzlies decisively triumphed over the Utah Jazz with a score of 140-103 on March 25, 2025. The win, which snapped a challenging three-game losing streak for Memphis, came without their star player Ja Morant, who was sidelined due to injury. Desmond Bane led the Grizzlies with 21 points, while teammate Jaren Jackson added 19 points, showcasing a powerful performance that allowed Memphis to turn the tide in a commanding second half.

The game, held at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, marked a contrasting narrative for both teams. The Jazz opened strong, gaining an early lead of 28-16 and finishing the first quarter ahead at 35-29; however, their momentum swiftly faded as the Grizzlies unleashed a high-octane offense after halftime. Utterly dominating the second half, Memphis outscored Utah 76-38, with notable efforts resulting in the Jazz's shooting woes.

The Grizzlies, struggling through a rough patch since Morant's injury, surged back to form. Early on, they faced pressure with the Jazz hot from beyond the arc, converting 13 of their first 19 three-point attempts in the first half. Isaiah Collier sparked the Jazz's offense, finishing the night as their top scorer with 21 points. But despite the initial success from long-range shooting, Utah's offensive strategy crumbled in the face of the Grizzlies' defensive adjustments as the game wore on.

Memphis demonstrated resilience as they responded to the halftime deficit, edging ahead just before the break on the heels of a critical run. Trailing 61-47 midway through the second quarter, they forced five consecutive missed three-point attempts by Utah and concluded the half with a flurry, outscoring the Jazz 17-4 to head into halftime with a slender 65-64 lead.

The third quarter was the turning point, where the Grizzlies displayed remarkable tenacity. They exploded for 41 points while allowing only 17 from Utah, marking their largest point differential in a quarter this season. Both Bane and Jackson continued their scoring surge, while Memphis notably dominated the boards, having a staggering rebounding advantage of 33-8 in the second half alone.

Even after Jackson left the court briefly after being hit in the face, Memphis’s defensive prowess shone through. They limited Utah to just one field goal for more than seven minutes during that stretch, effectively stifling the Jazz's offense.

The Grizzlies' shooting was another key factor behind their victory. Memphis managed to shoot 53.1% from the field and converted 44.4% of their three-point attempts, sinking 20 out of 45. This sharp shooting combined with their physical play in the paint, resulting in 64-32 edge on points scored inside, played crucial roles in the overall scoreline.

Jackson’s brief exit from the game did not derail Memphis’s momentum as they cruised into the fourth quarter with a 105-82 lead. Although the Jazz attempted to regain the upper hand, Memphis maintained control and finished the game without losing their edge.

Looking ahead, the Grizzlies are set to wrap up their five-game road trip against the Oklahoma City Thunder on March 27, 2025. This win may serve as a critical confidence booster for Memphis as they continue their journey towards playoff contention amidst challenges and threats presented by injuries. On the other hand, the Jazz, who have now lost 13 of their last 14 games, are aiming to regroup and will host the Houston Rockets also on March 27.

As the season progresses, both teams grapple with their respective challenges—Utah needs to turn around a dismal season with only ten games left to avoid setting a record low in wins, while Memphis must strive to overcome their recent troubles and remain in the playoff conversation without their leading player.
