Gretchen Whitmer Calls Trump Deranged Over Abortion Comments

Michigan Governor criticizes Trump's bizarre remarks on women at North Carolina rally amid 2024 election campaigns

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer critiqued former President Donald Trump's recent comments about women and abortion, calling them "deranged" and "ludicrous." This exchange unfolded after Trump addressed his supporters at a rally held on Saturday in North Carolina. During his speech, Trump emphasized themes surrounding women, claiming they would be "happy, healthy, confident, and free" if he reclaimed the presidency.

At this rally, Trump attempted to convey his strategies for women’s healthcare, which he suggested would shift focus away from abortion by relegated decisions about it to the states. He asserted, "You will no longer be thinking about abortion because it is now where it always had to be, with the states, and a vote of the people.” This perspective raised eyebrows, especially as he had previously shared his thoughts on Truth Social, stating “WOMEN ARE POORER THAN THEY WERE FOUR YEARS AGO, ARE LESS HEALTHY... AND ARE LESS OPTIMISTIC AND CONFIDENT IN THE FUTURE THAN THEY WERE FOUR YEARS AGO!”

Whitmer's sharp rebuke came during her appearance on CNN's "State of the Union." She expressed her disbelief at Trump's disconnect from reality, remarking, "This guy just doesn’t understand what the average woman is confronting in her life in this country, and how could he? He’s not lived a normal life. Unlike Kamala Harris, who has worked hourly jobs and knows how important it is for women to have healthcare and access to medical services.”

Notably, Whitmer’s comments reflect broader political sentiments where Democratic leaders are emphasizing women's rights and healthcare access, particularly important issues heading toward the 2024 presidential elections. Trump's rhetoric appears to have inadvertently put him at odds with growing public concern over reproductive rights, especially among women voters—a demographic where he is reportedly trailing.

Continuing the trend, recent polling data shows Vice President Kamala Harris leading Trump among women voters—fifty-seven percent of registered women voters supporting her compared to just thirty-seven percent backing Trump. These figures indicate a significant gap, particularly on the issue of abortion where Harris claims to hold a commanding twenty-one point advantage over her Republican counterpart.

The backdrop to these political skirmishes includes serious real-world consequences linked to restrictive abortion laws. During her remarks, Harris referenced the tragic case of Amber Nicole Thurman, whose death resulted from complications after taking abortion medication under strict Georgia laws. Harris highlighted this case as emblematic of the dangers posed by abortion bans, elaborately pointing out, “We understand the impact of these bans, and the horrific reality women and families are facing every single day since Roe was overturned.”

Trump's narrative, opting to frame abortion as merely administrative, reduced the significance of women’s health needs, which Whitmer vehemently critiqued. "He’s just deranged," she concluded, solidifying her stance. The clash over these core issues not only symbolizes the Democrats' focus on women's rights but also serves as a clarion call for engagement as 2024 approaches. How each party navigates the discourse around women's health and reproductive rights will likely play a pivotal role as the elections heat up.
