Greg James Pranks Fans With Neil Young Glastonbury Joke

The Radio 1 DJ's humorous take on Young's change of heart left listeners puzzled before his return.

Fans of BBC Radio 1 woke up to confusion when long-time DJ Greg James posted what seemed to be his farewell to the Breakfast Show. The post, which spouted concerns about the station being 'under corporate control,' had everyone wondering what was going on. But as it turned out, it was all part of a joke aimed at legendary musician Neil Young's recent statements about the Glastonbury Festival.

Greg James, 39, has been the voice of the flagship morning show since 2018. Despite the troubling tone of his post, he later clarified it was meant to poke fun at Neil Young’s rather dramatic U-turn concerning his own performance at the iconic festival.

Fans, initially horrified as they read through James's lengthy Instagram message, later learned it was just his way of lightheartedly mimicking Young’s own words. Young, 79, had called off his planned performance at Glastonbury, claiming it was 'under corporate control' of the BBC, which left many fans bewildered.

“The R1 Breakfast show team and I were looking forward to starting another year of the show and delivering a load of stupid stuff to get you through the early hours, it’s one of my all-time favourite gigs,” James wrote, only to follow up with the shocking statement about corporate control over Radio 1. James’s post mentioned the bizarre and humorous antics his show is known for, like 'messing around with the biggest stars' and conducting 'funerals for any more ducks.'

His playful declaration read: “Radio 1 is now under corporate control and is not the way I remembered it being. Hope to see you on one of my many podcasts instead.”

A few days later, Young himself began the new year by declaring he was no longer going to perform at Glastonbury, citing significant creative differences with the BBC. On New Year's Day, he released the statement, reflecting on his love for the festival, yet expressing disappointment with its current corporate affiliations.

Young’s tone mimicked James's by stating, “We were told the BBC was now a partner and wanted us to do many things we were not interested in.” This meant Young and his band, The Chrome Hearts, would not perform at the festival he cherished.

Fans and media outlets alike were taken aback by the synergy between these events as Greg James dropped his own teaser referencing Young's reasoning. “Due to an error in the information received, I had decided not to do the breakfast show, which I have always loved,” he later clarified on his Instagram, poking fun at the situation. “Happily, the radio show is now back on my itinerary and we look forward to being there when you need some fun in the morning!”

Things took another twist when Young astonishingly reversed his decision. After initially rejecting Glastonbury, he announced he would, after all, be performing there, declaring it also due to “an error in the information I received.” Many fans of the singer took to social media to share their delight, but also their confusion at the sudden change.

Just days earlier, Young posted on his Neil Young Archives site about his original beliefs. “Glastonbury is now under corporate control and is not the way I remembered it being,” he lamented, later stating he would be performing again at the festival. Young’s previous mentions had outlined the reluctance from artists to perform when they felt the festival had transformed from its free-spirited roots.

The back-and-forth playfulness highlighted the absurdity of the situation, as Greg comfortable poked fun at both the music scene and media dynamics. His closing remark about being curious about how management would react to his Neil Young joke made it clear he did not take his remarks too seriously. “I might have inadvertently ruined my first day back,” he quipped.

The Glastonbury Festival, known for its eclectic mix of music and celebrity appearances, has seen its share of top-tier acts, and both Young's and James’s comedic exchanges drew the spotlight back to the blurred lines between media, music, and the absurdity of celebrity culture.

With Glastonbury 2025 looming, the buzz surrounding ticket sales indicates it will be another popular event. Tickets for the festival sold out within moments, with exciting acts like Young, Olivia Rodrigo, and Taylor Swift rumored to headline alongside him. Both Greg and Neil embody how humor, artistry, and cultural shifts overlap, making for quite the unexpected and entertaining connection.

It’s safe to say, regardless of the corporate talk, fans are eager to see what surprises lie within young’s Glastonbury set come June and how Greg James continues to entertain his listeners on the air!
