GREENVILLE, Texas – The Greenville Police Department is mourning the tragic death of Officer Cooper Dawson, who was shot during a dangerous chase on Monday night. This incident marks the first line-of-duty death for the department in over 100 years, sending shockwaves through the local community and law enforcement agencies alike.
Officer Dawson, just 28 years old, was performing a routine traffic stop at approximately 7:40 PM near the 3500 block of Pickett Street when the situation escalated rapidly. The suspect fled on foot, prompting Dawson to chase after him. While pursuing the suspect through a wooded area, he was ambushed and shot multiple times.
Despite suffering grave injuries, Dawson demonstrated incredible bravery by returning fire and managing to strike the suspect, who also sustained injuries. Both Dawson and the suspect were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, after being airlifted to Medical City Plano, Officer Dawson succumbed to his injuries.
“We are heartbroken over the loss of Officer Cooper Dawson, who selflessly put his life on the line to serve and protect our community,” lamented Greenville Police Chief Chris Smith. “We ask the community to keep Officer Dawson’s family, our department, and Greenville itself in their thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
The emotional toll on the community has been palpable, with neighbors recounting the chaos of the situation. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire ringing out followed by police shouts to “get down.” Local law enforcement spent the night collecting evidence at the scene, marking the gravity of the event.
Many police vehicles from adjoining North Texas cities surrounded Medical City Plano early the following morning, as officers paid their respects to Dawson, showing solidarity across law enforcement agencies.
Officer Dawson was known not just for his dedication to his job but also for his role as a loving husband and father. Prior to joining the Greenville Police Department, he served with the Garland Police Department where he was highly regarded by his peers. “He wore the Garland PD badge with pride for seven years, dedicat[ing] himself to the safety and well-being of our community and Greenville PD,” the Garland Police Department shared, adding their condolences for Dawson’s family and friends.
This incident has raised many questions and concerns about police safety and community relations. According to police reports, the investigation will be handled by the Texas Department of Public Safety's Texas Rangers per departmental policy.
Following Dawson’s death, members of the public have come together to support his family. A memorial outside the Greenville Police Department has started to form, filled with flowers and messages of condolence from community members and fellow officers alike.
“His dedication to public service and his unwavering commitment to protecting the Greenville community will never be forgotten,” local authorities emphasized. They stressed the importance of remembering Dawson not just for the circumstances of his death but for the positive impact he had on countless lives.
Additional community gatherings and support initiatives are anticipated, aimed at providing comfort and solidarity during this time of loss. Officer Dawson’s story is not just about his tragic end but also about his legacy as someone who chose to protect and serve, even at the risk of his own life.
Details about Officer Dawson’s funeral services and memorials are expected to be announced shortly as the community begins the healing process from this devastating event. Residents of Greenville are reminded to come together and rally around those who are hurting during this sad time, drawing strength from one another.
For the Greenville Police Department, the loss of Officer Dawson is felt deeply, and it's hoped this tragedy will shine light on the risks law enforcement officers face daily. Community members are urged to keep supporting their local police and fostering healthy relationships moving forward.
