Green Party Meeting Set To Review Darleen Tana's Future

Dispute over former member's conduct heats up as lawmakers prepare for key assembly

The Green Party of New Zealand is gearing up for what could be a pivotal meeting on October 17, where they will discuss whether to invoke the controversial waka-jumping legislation against ex-member Darleen Tana. This decision follows Tana's resignation from the party back in July after it was revealed she likely had knowledge of allegations involving worker exploitation at her husband’s business.

Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick announced on Friday, following a High Court ruling favoring the party, the postponement of the special general meeting due to legal actions filed by Tana herself. Tana had sought judicial review and injunctions on various proceedings, claiming the party’s actions against her were unjust and unconstitutional.

"This Special General Meeting will discuss the potential use of provisions in the Electoral Act, informally known as the party-hopping law, in the case of Darleen Tana," stated Swarbrick. The upcoming meeting will require at least 75% support from delegates to move forward with any actions against Tana.

Despite the legal hurdles, the High Court has now cleared the path, dismissing Tana's claims and affirming the Green Party's right to conduct its proceedings. Swarbrick expressed her confidence in proceeding with the SGM and the decision to be made about Tana's status as she now serves as an independent MP.

Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding Tana stems from allegations of her knowledge of migrant worker exploitation, which she allegedly failed to disclose to party leaders. Following the investigation, which indicated her likely awareness, Tana resigned but has since contested the party's subsequent actions.

"There are multiple instances where Darleen Tana was absent from Parliament or failed to appoint another member to proxy vote on her behalf," Swarbrick added, emphasizing how her absence has impacted their voting power. Such situations had made the Green Party feel as though they were often short-handed during legislative decisions, particularly on key votes.

Despite these challenges, Tana's legal battle continues. She remains hopeful about appealing the court's decision, which could result in another delay for the Green Party's meeting and its intended course of action. Tana insists the party leaders did not abide by their own constitutional protocols throughout her ousting, signaling her intention to fight against what she sees as procedural unfairness.

Her lawyer remarked, "Darleen was motivated to seek this judicial review to establish clarity on what can be expected of party members and how the party conducts its internal governance." Tana’s case highlights the drawing lines between party levels and individual accountability, raising questions about the power dynamics within New Zealand's political system.

Green Party members across the country have been notified to prepare for discussions and delegate decisions during the SGM. Swarbrick reiterated the party’s commitment to honoring grassroots members' decisions, aligning with the ethos of democratic engagement within their ranks.

This saga marks just another chapter of political tensions within New Zealand, showcasing how allegations, legal challenges, and party statute interpretations can lead to significant internal strife. It also poses broader questions about party integrity and accountability, particularly as the political climate shifts and evolves.
