As anticipation builds for the 2025 NFL Draft, expected to attract 240,000 attendees, Green Bay prepares to address significant logistical challenges, with various innovative ideas proposed for accommodating visitors and managing transport.
GREEN BAY - It’s hard to believe, but it’s been almost two years since Green Bay Packers CEO Mark Murphy confirmed the Green Bay area would host the 2025 NFL Draft. The size and scope of the event, particularly in the absence of detailed planning information, boggled more than a few minds. If estimates are to be believed, about 240,000 attendees are expected over the three-day draft, raising the question: where will all these visitors stay? How would they navigate to and from the draft grounds without encountering traffic nightmares?
As concerns mounted regarding hotel space, imaginative proposals emerged from local officials and residents hoping to seize the spotlight that comes with the draft. With the offseason clock ticking, these ideas have been evaluated, and many are not likely to materialize. However, the process has showcased the creativity and determination of the community.
In discussions back in May 2023, Murphy suggested the intriguing possibility of a cruise ship docked at Leicht Memorial Park to cater to the influx of draft-related visitors. This proposal was intriguing, particularly given the increased visibility it could provide not only for the draft but also for the Great Lakes cruise industry. Unfortunately, local cruise ship operators informed organizers that sailing a ship solely for the draft would be prohibitive, due to vessel logistics and already existing bookings. "Ultimately, the cruise ship idea didn’t pan out due to cost issues and scheduling conflicts," noted Port of Green Bay Director Dean Haen.
Transportation has been another area of concern. In May 2023, discussions took place about the possibility of charter Amtrak trains running from Milwaukee to Green Bay during the draft. A proposal supported by the Packers aimed to promote greater accessibility for the event, yet the Amtrak charter was deemed impractical. “While Amtrak expressed interest, the logistical feasibility of running such a service during the draft was challenging,” said a Packers spokesperson.
Adding to the conversation around transport, in January 2023, leaders from Northeastern Wisconsin petitioned the federal government to include passenger rail service from Milwaukee to Green Bay in its Corridor ID rail expansion studies. The good news is that in December 2023, federal officials selected the Green Bay route for further study; however, the timing wasn’t conducive to develop a promotional effort leading into the draft.
With hotel occupancy predicted to be extremely competitive, the Packers and local tourism representatives anticipated the need for accommodations to stretch beyond just Green Bay itself. Local officials began preparations to make available more RV options at campgrounds across Brown County, with sites in some areas filling quickly, although many remain available. “Despite some campgrounds selling out, there's still plenty of space for those planning to visit, especially for families who may wait until closer to the event,” a local tourism representative indicated.
Additionally, owners of private residences jumped into the fray, listing homes on rental platforms such as Airbnb, with some properties pricing high for the occasion. Still, many of the vacation rentals remain available as the draft draws closer, indicating that the expected surge in bookings has yet to reach its peak.
In another logistical effort, Green Bay city officials discussed extending bar operating hours in collaboration with the Brown County Tavern League. This proposal, presented in April 2024, would have allowed bars to stay open until 4 a.m., particularly on draft weekend. However, similar initiatives in other regions have seen limited impact, and safety concerns arose. “There wasn’t enough momentum with city officials to push this effort through,” acknowledged City Council member Brian Johnson.
As these ideas become a part of the conversation leading up to the draft, anticipation continues to build. While some grand plans have fizzled out, the preparations highlight the community’s enthusiasm for the event.
The NFL Draft marks a significant occasion, not only for football fans but for a city that has long cherished its football heritage. Green Bay aims to showcase itself and the surrounding area as a vibrant destination capable of hosting a global event.
As the event date approaches, the excitement becomes palpable, with a collective hope that the local efforts will result in a successful draft, celebrated as much for its organization as for the players selected.
