Greek Police Uncover Major Arms Cache Amid Rising Domestic Tensions

Recent raids reveal explosive capabilities linked to organized crime and extremist groups after violent events shook Athens.

Greek police recently made headlines when they seized a significant cache of explosives and firearms from a storage area located within an apartment building in Athens. This operation, which took place on November 19, 2024, marks the culmination of heightened security measures being implemented throughout Greece, especially following several violent incidents linked to organized crime and extremist groups.

The raid involved finding nearly 50 kilograms (approximately 110 pounds) of various explosives including ammonium nitrate, TNT, and ammonium dynamite, along with 25 detonators, several firearms, and other related materials. The authorities responded swiftly after receiving reports of suspicious items, underscoring the pressing threat posed by militancy and organized crime.

This operation closely follows multiple raids executed two weeks prior, wherein police discovered large quantities of explosives and firearms across various locations. Although the authorities are still determining if there's any connection between these cases, the amount of illicit materials recovered suggests the existence of sophisticated underground networks.

These recent actions by Greek law enforcement come at a time when the country has been grappling with issues of domestic terrorism and organized crime. Historically, Greece has faced challenges from both radical left-wing groups and organized crime factions. The latter has been known to engage in violent acts, including targeted assassinations and bombings.

Associated with these recent developments, authorities reported tragic incidents such as the explosion of what was deemed to be an improvised bomb on October 31, which resulted in the death of one man and serious injuries to another. That incident raised alarms about the activities of aspiring domestic terrorists within youth groups.

While the major extremist organizations like the Revolutionary Struggle and the Popular Fighters Group have been largely dismantled, smaller splinter groups remain operational and could potentially pose risks of rekindling violent activities reminiscent of earlier decades.

The Ministry of Citizen Protection, led by Michalis Chrisochoidis, has expressed concern over the need to monitor these new, smaller factions, who cite political grievances as motivation for their actions.

Investigators now aim to unravel the complex web surrounding this arms cache, examining possible links to past extremist groups active during the tumultuous socio-political climate of the late 2000s and early 2010s. It remains unclear what plans, if any, might have involved this stockpile of explosive materials.

During the search at the central Athens unit located at the intersection of Damagitou and Aglavridon streets, officers from the Special Violent Crimes Unit were dispatched, along with bomb disposal experts, to secure the area and analyze the evidence found. Among the seized items were crafted explosives techniques such as gelignite and significant quantities of gunpowder, which point to serious criminal intents.

Meanwhile, the police’s anti-terrorism unit has taken the lead on the investigation, focusing on any potential resurgence of guerrilla activities. This investigation takes on added prominence against the backdrop of Greece grappling with socio-political fragmentation and incidents of public disorder. Such upheaval raises questions about whether more serious plots are being fashioned internally within the country.

Despite the alarming findings, authorities declared no contemporaneous connections were identified between the Pangrati arms cache and the earlier incidents. Nevertheless, deep-rooted concerns remain as the potential for violence looms with evidence of political activism behind radicalized youth networks.

With the overall goal of enhancing public safety, officials have underscored the importance of community vigilance. Citizens discovering suspicious items or activities must report their observations to local authorities as the police navigate through the turbulent waters of Greece’s security environment.

This alarming scenario serves as a reminder of the persistent threats intertwined with domestic extremism, as Greece attempts to stabilize following years of crisis.

Looking to the future, as law enforcement agencies work diligently to dismantle any indications of organized crime operations and extremist plots remaining covert, the nation’s resolve will be tested. The evidence suggests the existence of persistent actors determined to exploit social dissent amid Greece's challenging political climate.
