Greece Opens Tax Filing System With New Rules For 2025

Taxpayers navigate early submission discounts and changes to streamline filing process.

The electronic tax filing system Taxis has officially opened for the 2025 tax year, allowing approximately 6.8 million tax returns to be submitted by taxpayers across Greece. This launch, which commenced on March 17, 2025, aligns with the deadline for submissions set for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, marking significant changes aimed at improving the ease and efficiency of tax reporting.

The introduction of the platform aims not only to facilitate the tax filing process but also to adapt to new legislative requirements. The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) has overhauled functionalities on the "Declaration of Income Tax FP E1 - E2 - E3" platform to cater to both natural persons and business owners.

With the opening of the Taxis system, the AADE will assign refund eligibility and engage users through automatic matching of tax returns. Taxpayers should be aware of key deadlines: original returns need to be submitted by April 24, 2025, for those not already filed, and corrective filings can be made without penalties from April 25, 2025, until the final deadline. Crucially, the AADE has indicated, "The AADE will automatically correct this on Thursday, April 25, 2025,” ensuring many taxpayers benefit from streamlined procedures.

Tax payments will be structured across eight installments, starting with the first payment due by July 31, 2025, and extending up to February 2026 for the final installment. For taxpayers willing to pay their dues upfront, who adhere to the timeline, attractive discounts are available: 4% for submissions by April 30, 2025, 3% if made between May 1 and June 15, 2025, and 2% for submissions made until July 15, 2025. The AADE notes, "If the tax is paid in full by Thursday, July 31, 2025, a discount on the total amount of the tax is provided,” adding incentive for timely payment.

This year's regulations bring significant changes, especially for freelancers and people renting properties. Notably, the annual fee for businesses has been abolished, offering savings of approximately 325 euros, and reducing tax burdens considerably. The farmers with four children will see their tax-free allowance increase by 1,000 euros, translating to benefits up to 240 euros annually. Landlords whose properties were vacant can expect financial relief as they are exempt from taxes on rents for contracts signed for periods of at least three years.

For taxpayers who find their pre-filled information incorrect or inadequate, the process allows for adjustments to be made easily. Those experiencing discrepancies must submit either initial or corrective declarations based on the research findings of the AADE and associated third parties. These adjustments should ideally be made before the cut-off dates to avoid penalties.

For millions of Greek taxpayers, the streamlined process assures not only efficiency but also avoids the hardships associated with previous systems. With the automatic submission feature, approximately 1.3 million pre-filled returns for over 1.5 million taxpayers have already been initiated, allowing greater accuracy and all-around expedited filing. The infrastructure enables users to review their information and confirm correctness before submission, helping to sidestep errors and regulatory issues.

Taxpayers are urged to act quickly, as the overall philosophy behind this year’s filing system emphasizes the benefits of early submissions. Those who file early stand to gain additional financial advantages, as indicated by the structured discount plan. Amidst the many regulations, thorough knowledge of the updates and diligent tracking of deadlines will be imperative for those wishing to minimize their tax burdens effectively.

Overall, the transition to the newly configured Taxis system symbolizes the Greek government’s commitment to simplifying tax obligations and improving access for the public. The phased approach ensures taxpayers have adequate time to familiarize themselves, from the important submission deadlines to learning about potential benefits reserved for early filers and those facing unique circumstances. Taxpayers who understand their duties and exercise the available options will likely emerge with minimized stress and maximized financial benefit.
