Grass Fire Erupts In West Edmonton, Evacuations Underway

Thick smoke prompts business evacuations and traffic disruptions as fire crews battle the flames.

A fire in west Edmonton could be seen far and wide early Tuesday afternoon, May 6, 2025. A plume of thick, black smoke was visible across the city from a fire that appeared to be originating from an area near the west leg of Anthony Henday Drive, north of Stony Plain Road.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services reported that it received calls regarding a brush and grass fire near 186 Street and 104 Avenue at 12:30 p.m. Fire crews arrived on the scene just five minutes later, at 12:35 p.m., and as of 1:20 p.m., they were still hard at work trying to bring the fire under control.

Due to the severity of the smoke, police announced the evacuation of several businesses in the vicinity. Traffic was significantly affected, with Anthony Henday Drive being shut down in both directions at 100 Avenue/Stony Plain Road as thick smoke engulfed the freeway, according to 511 Alberta. Drivers in the area were warned to expect delays as traffic was rerouted.

This fire emerges amidst dry, hot weather conditions combined with high winds, which have heightened the fire risk across Alberta. The situation is reminiscent of a near-identical fire that broke out in the same area two years ago, in 2023.

As the fire continues to develop, residents and businesses are urged to stay alert and follow safety guidelines. The Edmonton Fire Rescue Services is working diligently to contain the flames and prevent further spread.

In the context of rising fire risks, officials are emphasizing the importance of preparedness and awareness during this challenging weather season. With similar incidents in the past, the community is reminded to remain vigilant and report any signs of fire immediately.
