Chess enthusiasts are gearing up for the much-anticipated Chennai Grand Masters Chess Tournament, which is set to kick off on November 7, 2024. This prestigious event, held at the Anna Centenary Library, promises intense competition among some of the top chess players globally.
One of the highlights of this year’s tournament is World No. 4, Indian grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi. This marks his debut on Indian soil since hitting the remarkable milestone of surpassing the 2800 ELO rating. Arjun will face off against compatriot Vidit Gujarathi during the opening round, setting the stage for what many expect to be thrilling matches throughout the event.
Besides Arjun and Vidit, the tournament features seven other elite competitors. Aravindh Chithambaram will take on Iranian chess star Amin Tabatabaei, and the French grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave is back to compete against another Iranian player, Parham Maghsoodloo. American Grandmaster Levon Aronian will also be part of the lineup, where he will clash with Alexey Sarana from Russia.
The tournament consists of seven rounds, following an all-play-all format, making it one of the strongest classical chess events held in India. This is not just about the grandmasters; there’s also a Challengers event this year. For the first time, female players will have the opportunity to showcase their skills alongside their male counterparts.
Dr. Atulya Misra, Additional Chief Secretary of Youth Welfare and Sports Development, expressed his enthusiasm, remarking, “Chennai has become the city of Grand Masters. We started with the Chess Olympiad, then the Chennai Grand Masters last year, and now we are back with grandeur this year.” He noted the backing from both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, who are passionate about promoting chess and sports within the state.
The Challengers event aims to bolster the Indian chess scene by providing young talents with exposure to high-level competitions. Featured participants include the well-known Harika Dronavalli and Vaishali Rameshbabu, who is the sister of rising star R Praggnanandhaa. The competition will also see upcoming talents like Raunak Sadhwani and Karthikeyan Murali engage in head-to-head battles.
With financial incentives on the line, the prize pool for the Challengers event stands at 20 lakh INR, with the winner set to pocket 6 lakh INR and earn automatic entry to the next year’s Masters tournament.
Last year's champion, Gukesh D., who became widely celebrated for his astounding performances, unfortunately, won’t be participating this year. Gukesh is currently focusing on his preparations for the world championship match against Ding Liren from China, making room for new contenders to shine.
All eyes will be on Chennai as the tournament not only promises to produce exciting games but also aims to inspire future generations of chess players. With so many promising talents participating, chess fans are likely to witness remarkable skill and strategy on display.
For those unfamiliar with chess tournaments, the format allows players to compete against all other participants. Each match holds significant importance as every point contributes to the overall ranking and can lead to higher international recognition.
The Chennai Grand Masters Chess Tournament is viewed as pivotal for the players involved; not only does it provide room for competition but also the potential to earn substantial ranking points and prizes, which can significantly impact their careers.
Many are hoping to see breakthrough performances, especially from players competing for the first time at such high levels. The opportunity for them to learn from the best is invaluable and can prove to be the stepping stone they need to rise within the ranks of the chess world.
With the grandmasters poised, the opening rounds will surely set the tone for the rest of the tournament, making it one of the must-watch events of the year. Chess aficionados and casual fans alike are hoping for strategic brilliance and thrilling finishes across all rounds, marking the Chennai Grand Masters not just as another tournament, but as part of India's growing chess legacy.
