The Grand Sumo Spring Tournament reached its 10th day on March 18, 2025, bringing fans excitement and high stakes as wrestlers vied for dominance on the dohyo. The competition featured several matches with significant outcomes for the wrestlers involved, shifting the leaderboard with every bout.
One of the most anticipated matchups of the day was between Daiseki, the grand champion from Tsugaru Town, and Takayasu, the 4th maegashira. Once riding the wave of five consecutive wins, Daiseki faced Takayasu with confidence. Despite his initial aggression, as he moved forward at the tachiai (initial charge), Daiseki unfortunately was outmaneuvered and forced out of the ring, suffering his second loss of the tournament. With this defeat, Daiseki’s record shifted to 8 wins and 2 losses. Looking to regain his winning streak, he is set to face Yuryo, the 5th maegashira, on March 19.
Meanwhile, Wakatakakage, the 9th maegashira hailing from Anamizu Town, fought against Kinbozan, the 5th maegashira. After starting off strong this season, Wakatakakage found himself on the uneven end of the fight, losing and bringing his record to 5 wins and 5 losses. His next opponent will be Shodai, the 7th maegashira, on March 19.
Another noteworthy bout featured Ryuden from Kofu City, who competed against Sadanoumi, the 15th maegashira. Despite his efforts to seize control of the match with his right hand inside grip, Ryuden faltered as Sadanoumi executed a clever counter, leading to Ryuden’s defeat, which left him with 4 wins and 6 losses. He now faces the challenges of improving his standing before it’s too late.
Among other local competitors, Sakito from Nanao City, currently ranked 12th among the juryo, struggled as well, losing to Hironoumi from the 6th juryo. With this fall, Sakito now sits at 3 wins and 7 losses, and has another match scheduled against Hironoumi on March 19.
For the only Nagasaki Prefecture representative, Hiratoumi, the 6th maegashira, it was also not his day as he faced Oushoma, the 8th maegashira. Hiratoumi’s attempt to match his opponent’s strength ended with him getting thrown down, marking another loss bringing his record to 5 wins and 5 losses. He will look to bounce back as he prepares to meet Kinokawa, the 10th maegashira, tomorrow.
Adding to the mix, Tagaryunami from Omura City came out on the winning end of his match, securing 2 wins and 3 losses after defeating his opponent decisively.
On the other hand, Wakamifuji from Unzen City faced disappointment, suffering yet another loss which places his record at 2 wins and 3 losses.
The tournament brings together wrestlers from across Japan, and the stakes are high. Any losses could be detrimental to rankings, and as the tournament progresses, the tension is palpable. Wrestlers and their supporters await the outcomes of their next matches with bated breath.
Tomorrow promises to be just as thrilling, with several matches scheduled as competitors continue their quest for tournament glory. Fans of sumo wrestling are eagerly anticipating how these matches will shake up the standings and what new surprises await them.
